Starting a Whole New (Homeschool) Year! First Day Plans

20 July 2012
Supply Baskets
9th grade and 6th grade books/supplies

K/1st grade and Pre-K books/supplies

We begin our FOURTH homeschool year on Monday...and we are excited to start up full time.  It's been a rough summer for us because we have NOT been accustomed to such HEAT that is here in Texas.  The last five years were spent in Germany and the summers are nice and short.

Anyway,  we begin on Monday.  I have all of their curriculum set to go.  If you'd like to see in detail the curriculum I have for all my boys- you can visit HERE.    In the tradition of what we learned in Germany that is popular for the German children (on their first day) is giving the children a Schultüten (school cone) .  This year I just bought small baskets ($0.88 at Walmart)  along  with the school supplies and just dumped them in the container

List of Supplies:
  1. watercolors
  2. colored pencils
  3. rulers
  4. erasers
  5. pens
  6. pencils
  7. colors
  8. scissors
  9. candy (of course)
  10. highlighters
  11. paper
  12. notebooks
  13. glue

Not sure of the events of the day, but we will be going over the boys assignments & explain their planners (the older two).  The boys will be hitting the books (reading list) before the day is through.  I plan to take 'school photos', plus I found this great freebie on Pinterest for 1ST Day School Printables -which I still need to print out.

My number one goal is to start at 0800.  LOL!!

We'll see how it goes from there.  :)

Parents Prayer

Oh, God, make me a better parent.
Help me to understand my children,
To listen patiently to what they have to say
And to answer all their questions kindly.

Keep me from interrupting them,
Talking back to them and contradicting them.
Make me as courteous to them
As I would have them be to me.

Give me the courage to confess my sins
Against my children and to ask of them forgiveness,
When I know that I have done them wrong.

May I not vainly hurt the feelings of my children.
Forbid that I should laugh at their mistakes or
Resort to shame and ridicule as punishment.

Let me not tempt a child to lie and steal.
So guide me hour by hour that I may demonstrate
By all I say and do that honestly produces happiness.
Reduce, I pray, the meanness in me.

May I cease to nag:
And when I am out of sorts,
Help me, O Lord, to hold my tongue.

Blind me to the little errors of my children
And help me to see the good things that they do.
Give me a ready word for honest praise.

Help to treat my children as those of their own age,
But let me not exact of them the judgments and conventions of adults.
Allow me not to rob them of the opportunity to wait upon themselves,
To think, to choose, and to make decisions.

Forbid that I should ever punish them for my self-satisfaction.
May I grant them all of their wishes that are reasonable
And have the courage always to withhold a privilege that I know will do them harm.

Make me so fair and just, so considerate and companionable to my children that they will have a genuine esteem for me.
Fit me to be loved and imitated by my children.
With all thy gifts, Oh God, do give me calm and poise and self control.

You seem very on top of things! I have an oddish question, I see fom one of your photos you are using omnibus from veritas press. Do you like it? I am very torn about investing in it and could use a viewpoing or two. My 7th grader is dying to use the program and my 12 th grader is willing but as this is her final year of homeschool we are not sure about her.

This is my 9th grader's first year with it. He is using Omnibus III. I would recommend it, if they are avid resders (my son is), but since we are new to the program --you do have to to get used to it. So far it's been fine, but this is our second week. The discussion questions, essays, and reading is extensive!! I LOVE IT! Some of the read list of books for a freshman, in a public school is reading material for a senior. I would warn you that you should look at the reading list for each book. As a Christian, some of this books (classics) are not Christian based, but I feel they are necessary to read. So the maturity level of each child -- you can decide. VP says that from the start Omnibus I -- the material is age appropriate and the student should be able to handle the material.

At the beginning of our first week is heavy Bible theology. I have to remind my son that it's Theology, Literature, AND History rolled into one (He loves History). So bottom line... if the child is an avid reader and you lean towards a classical education/CM ---it's great!! I love that I'll be reading some of the classics I've never read either along side with him! It's great discussions!
