Bible Bee: Week 1 Gone.

08 June 2012

This is our first year to ever participate in the Bible Bee.  One reason we've never tried before is because we were stationed overseas for the last five years and we were not able to do it. However, once we came to Texas, I came upon the website FEAST and they are going to host the local contest here in August.  So we signed up.  FEAST is going to have a Bible Bee Kick-Off & Fellowship next week, so we are excited to go and learn from others...

Before we received our Bible Bee materials, a friend let me look at her Bible Bee binder from a previous year...to tell you the truth, I was then a little apprehensive to get the materials.  It looked like a lot of work to memorize ALL those scriptures.  As I thought about it some more, I remember reading about the Muslim faith/people and what it entails for the youth in that religion.  They are to memorize the whole Koran in their early youth...do they have super powers, photogenic memory??  Some may, but not all.  It's just made to be an important part of their lives..the Scriptures.

So why not for us?  Again, it's not a punishment or something we'll have to spend hours upon each day (though it should), but it takes 20-30 minutes per day--so far. I read from the parent handbook and receive some instructions and passage to share, then we all go over 2 Timothy and then join in and participate in discussion with the Sword Study Notebook.  Soon, we are also going to use our Balancing the Sword  volumes.  When I first was looking into the Bible Bee, I came across Balancing the Sword and they were recommended by some of the participants; to include some contest winners.

I have a Parent's Guidebook,  and each child (two of them) will be participating in the Junior Level (which is from ages 10-14).  Each student received an official T-shirt, a Bible Bee Bible, 25 note cards with the focus Scripture, and a Sword Study Notebook.  I have also purchased the CD with the musical scripture 2012.

The highlighted scriptures/book is that of 2 Timothy.

Vital Statistics:
Purpose: To give final instructions and encouragement to Timothy, pastor of the church at Ephesus.
Author: Paul
Original Audience: Timothy
Date Written:  Approx. A.D. 66 or 67, from prison in Rome. Paul was arrested and executed under Emperor Nero.
Setting: Paul was virtually alone in prison; only Luke was with him. Paul wrote this letter to pass the torch to the new generation of church leaders. He also asked for visits from his friends, for his books, especially the parchments --- possibly parts of the Old Testament, the Gospels, and other biblical manuscripts.  Because this is Paul's last letter, it reveals his heart and his priorities -- sound doctrine, steadfast faith, confident endurance, and lasting love.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. ~ 2 Timothy 2:15.

On to week two.
