Homeschool Journal: 5 Mar 12

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In our homeschool this week…

We are slowly catching up after a week that I was away to see my ill father/grandpa. I didn't take my older two boys while traveling, they stayed with dad. They did do most of their work, but somehow they didn't "find" the CD for Ben's math, so we are trying to catch up. I recently asked on FB how everyone deals with this (getting behind), but I mostly got answers like don't try to catch up and just start where we left off...which makes sense (even if it was just a week).

I will probably not finish this school year as early as I thought. As we moved from Germany to TX during the holidays and STILL living in a hotel by March proved to be a difficult task to move on in our schooling...and not having all our BOOKS if completely driving me bonkers!! It's been a struggle to say the least. :)

I MISS MY PRINTER!! ;) It should be getting better though...we move in our home by the end of this week! YAY!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We went to our local library finally (near the house) to get our library cards!! Fantastic!! Also they have a teen meeting every Tuesday for board games and such, and I hope it's a great group of kids and then our oldest can meet new friends in the area.

Visited the O.P. Schnabel Park finally! The FUN we will have!!!!

There is a local Y.M.C.A. there...I need to check out the prices (and if we can afford it!)

And went furniture shopping on Saturday!! New bedroom set, living room, and bunk beds for the kiddos...and my aunt is giving us a FREE dining room set!! AMEN!

Now we just need a refrigerator. Why so expensive??? One sales person replied, "New tax on appliances." Really...didn't know that. :/

My favorite thing this week was…

1. Saying my Marriage Vows again to my Love. (More to come in a different post)

2. Knowing that we'll be moving soon into our new home!! I can't wait for it. ;)

Questions/thoughts I have…

Is it okay to use the A Beka books I have when my oldest was in 6th grade (3 years ago) and use it next year for my other son (who is going into the sixth grade)?? I would have to order new English book,Spelling, but otherwise the Science and Math, are reusable -- but do I want to do that??

Things I’m working on…

Reading my Bible every day. It's easier now that I have downloaded You Version on my phone.

I’m reading…

1. For my Church Ladies Book Club: The Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers
2. For my Sunday School Meeting: Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham Jr.
3. For Parenting Skills Tune up: Full-Time Parenting - A Guide to Family-Based Discipleship by Israel Wayne (just received it recently)

I’m grateful for…

God, My Husband, and my Children.

I’m praying for…

My Dad/Grandfather, who was recently put on hospice care.
For Kirby, brain tumor
For my Husband
For my Children
For my Marriage
Our upcoming move into our new home
Our upcoming school year and what to order
Date Night - we are supposed to go roller skating!! Lord help me (my husband for sure)
Unspoken Prayers
My our President and his decisions for our Country
Upcoming Elections

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Wow sounds like a busy week. I agree with those that told you to just start where you are. catching up will happen just not as fast as we like. Reusing books is actually a great money saver. I do it with my kids and if I need to supplement a bit to update the library and the internet has lots of resources to do so. It saves tons of money this way.

Thank you both for insight and comments! ;)

Sounds like you are slowly settling in. We move in August and I do not look forward to that, moving right when our homeschool year is supposed to begin. I might have to pick your brain a bit on how to do it. I say re-use the books too. That is one benefit of having two or more kids. When DH and I discussed high school costs, that was a huge perk, buy for one use for the other. It is almost like buy-one, get-one free. LOL!

Lisa, I pretty much just put the basics in a suitcase, whiteboards, my laptop, and tons of CDs (lot of the freebie stuff I get)...and have been using for most of Dec., Jan., Feb., and into March now. We are reading a series of Volumes for History and I only back two of them--if we had to go any longer; I would have headed to the library (which isn't bad).

If helps with the transitioning (homeschooling). I can't imagine living in a hotel (outside the base) and trying to find transportation, school, for the kids while the jet-lag is still here there.

I suppose that's a perk!! And Texas homeschool laws are not rigid (so that's another plus).

I will tell you one thing ---- I MISS MY PRINTER!! lol Take care Lisa.

Hi Jessica,

I'm new to your blog and can relate to the household of boys, we have 5 and 1 daughter!;)
I'd love a review of Isreal Wayne's book if you get a chance. I've read the other two that you are currently reading and have to give two thumbs up for Voddie, love him!

Blessings,
KellyinPA
