Upon the posts of thy House

03 April 2012

Anyone who is Christian is familiar with the verses of Deuteronomy 6: 5-9. Many Christian homeschoolers actually use these verses as a guidepost as to why we educate at home.

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. - Deuteronomy 6:5

Deu 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Deu 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Deu 6:9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Well, here recently, as I have been mentioning, we are going through the book by Voddie Bauchman Jr., titled - Family Driven Faith. I love this book. I can't fathom why some do not take the time to read it or at least have it on their to-do book list.

It really isn't a ground-breaking, light-bulb moment because, technically if we read our bible as much as we checked the weather, we know it's already been said. He just brings it to light through his family's experience.

This last chapter we went over, Chapter 7 - Mark the Home as God's Territory.

Great Chapter! (well all of them are)

I must make a disclaimer: If you are a Christian in long standing, maybe this post is not for you --you might already be doing this!! :)

After reading the chapter, I had the sudden urgency to go out and buy more Christian art. As we were overseas, we were fortunate to visit many places..and my favorite was Rome. The Vatican is another state by itself, but Rome was definitely an experience.

So when he described his visit to the Louvre Museum in Paris and just mesmerized...and knowing again that God (Jesus) is a part of our History. Many paintings held or gave the story of the Bible. I don't understand why some deny Jesus. It's a matter of where your faith is- I suppose.

Anyway...to see the Sistine Chapel in person is awe-inspiring. So I can understand to a degree. I did not visit France, not after being in Belgium for a year (that's another story, for a later date)...

Well, in a nutshell, we as saints, should be grateful that we are Saved. Right?? Does our own homes show that? We went home and this week I am been observing this...and I'd give us a B+.

Of course we can all do better by LIVING the Word, but also SHOWING our devotion and love to the Lord.

I had to go shopping and one of the places I stopped by was Big Lots -- love it! And for $10.00 dollars, I got some vinyl lettering with a verse. I tried to post it in my living room, but the surface isn't smooth and it wasn't sticking...so next best place was the mirror at our front entrance.

I love the verse, John 15:12 ~ This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Within this chapter he quoted Arthur Pink's FAMILY WORSHIP:

The advantages and blessings of family worship are incalculable. First, family worship will prevent much sin. It awes the soul, conveys a sense of God’s majesty and authority, sets solemn truths before the mind, brings down benefits from God on the home. Personal piety in the home is a most influential means, under God, of conveying piety on the little ones. Children are largely creatures of imitation, loving to copy what they see in others. “He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments” (Psa. 78:5-7).

A great question that is mentioned in Family Driven Faith:

Why is it that Christian families think nothing of a lifestyle that demands hours per week traipsing across town, blood, sweat, and tears from our children and thousands of dollars each year from our bank accounts, but the idea of a twenty-minute daily commitment to family worship immediately strikes them as too much to ask?

Wow --boot to the head!! (It's an old saying we picked up from being stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA). Rings true I would believe to MANY of us.

"A family without prayer {family worship} is like a house without a roof, open and exposed to all the storms of Heaven."

I have many blessings in my life

* my salvation
* my family
* my husband (who leads in prayer and worship)
* my children
* my church
* a home

A home to make known to others that God is and ever shall be our focus in life.

Love Love Love it! I just discovered a teaching series sitting around the house the other day called... (you'll never guess)... FAMILY DRIVEN FAITH! I don't know where it came from or how long we had it but I breezed right through listening to them, listened to them again, am listening to them with my husband... gave them to the youth minister at our congregation (who in turned shared it at a leadership meeting). So good! ...

Our congregation recites those verses from Deuteronomy (upon the posts of thy house) every week in our liturgy and I always grasp my children as I say it and remember what my job is... to speak of these things as I walk by the way, as I lie down, and when I rise up (the kids always know when mom is going to go into another speech about what the Bible says about something we are looking at, doing, or experiencing).

Thanks for the great post! It is so encouraging to see other families pressing on toward their heavenly calling TOGETHER!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! Come back soon! Sincerely, Jessica
