Our Curriculum for SY 2011-2012

28 April 2011

Wow...it's already that time of year again. Everyone is busy looking at catalogs, going to homeschool conferences, (or like me) shopping on-line for our curriculum. Well, I am glad to say that we have our curriculum ready for this school year! YAY!

I am always interested in what everyone else is using and their learning styles/methods...it helps me decide by reading their reviews (likes and dislikes)

As with the Charlotte Mason method, most of our curriculum carries over---hence, another reason why I love CM. It does really save on curriculum choices, time, and money!

Okay, here it goes~ A (*) means this subject is to be taught together in a group. We have already started our new school year this last week (started on the 25th of July). So far so good and just really trying to get into the routine of things again.

AS YOU WILL NOTICE: Most of the boys curriculum are repeated for group learning. We like this approach and even though some of the curriculum is geared more towards our 8th grader....some of the material will not be required of our 5th grader. Most of our lesson are to be read out loud because both are auditory learners and this approach works well with narration and learning.

Looks like you have an awesome year planned! I am still working on gathering everything we will be using next year. I have a love for books, so it is hard just buying what I know we will use!! :)

Thank you Joy for stopping by!! Yes, I love books too! Most of our stuff is carried over from this year...so not much to the add expense. And a love of our stuff are freebies...

I love the library and my Beautiful Feet Catalog!! :) Love to see your curriculum when you finalize. Thanks.

Looks like some wonderful things in store! I have been going through our bookshelves & school closet to decide what I'm going to use/do for the new SY as well. I am thinking I am going to go with Oak Meadow for the main part of our curriculum next school year (grades K & 5) but we have a lot of supplemental items as well for subjects not directly covered by them.

@Melonie: Haven't seen Oak Meadow...but I will look at it! Thanks for sharing and stopping by!

@The Cast: Thank you! We'll start early because we PCS during the next school year!! :/

We'll be using the Apologia anatomy as well and I'm so excited. I also love Starfall for my preschooler/Kindergartner. I remember when my oldest was using it. *sniff* Another good one is http://www.progressivephonics.com/, have you seen it? My son cracks up at the silly stories but he feels confident when he's able to read some of the words with me. Confidence in reading is always good, right? Thanks for linking up!

Thank you all for responding! ;) I am in a mad rage to get our homeschool room cleaned..so we can start next week!! ;)

@Amber- I am excited about the Human A & P and yes, I have heard of progressive phonics too. --That looks great too! Thanks for stopping by everyone!

Hi Jessica! I popped over here from HOTM's NOT Back to School Blog Hop and it's so exciting to me to see other moms list their aspirations for their homeschool! And I am diggin' your list! You really had me at the picture of all those books -- makes my heart all of a flutter! This title, Journibles, is new to me -- I plan on checking it out! I do hope you'll head over to see what's going on at our homeschool!
Thank you for sharing and have a blast this year!

It seems like I am hearing positive things about Apologia Science at every turn and I am leaning towards it for that reason, though I have never actually seen it. How much prep. time does it take for you? How long are the lessons? Is it easily adaptable for multiple ages at once? Any advice you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jessica S. said...

@Sharla...there isn't a whole lot of prep time if you purchase a lab kit. Otherwise, you have to find the materials yourself. (Hint)there is a pre-made list of materials ready for you and/or use Donnayoung.org (Click on Apologia Science) --even breaks down each book/lessons for you. I do believe it's adaptable for teaching as a group. That's why I do like it. Eventhough I get two different books for my boys...I find them sharing their knowledge with each other. Each lesson is how much you want to read. We usually read 3-4 pages per day; plus go over review questions/projects. Hope this helps! :) Happy Homeschooling. *Some people don't like Apologia -for some reason (content/textbook-like), but we do enjoy it.

@ rowena___. Thank you so much!! I find that in today's world/economy...we must include financial knowledge somehow BEFORE they leave the household. I want to get Dave Ramsey's homeschool curriculum (for next year), but this is a way to get them thinking about the workforce...you don't 'work' you don't get paid. Learn to save, tithe, and spend wisely. :)

Thank you for stopping by my blog and commenting. :)

I have thought about the CM method for homeschooling. My friend uses it for her two children. I'm not sure why I never pursued it.

Enjoy your school year!

Hey Jessica, What do you think of "Balancing the Sword" as a family? the first time I heard of it was on here looking at your blog. I went to check it out and it looks good. I was thinking about what kind of bible study we could do as a family that isn't too mushy and "story time"-like. Something with "substance" but can be discussed with smaller children too...

Also, I love love love Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. My daughter is almost done with it and she is 4 1/2. She loves it! When she completes it, we'll throw her a party (just our immediate family and a couple close friends) and give her her very own KJV! I am so excited! Hahaha.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! Come back soon! Sincerely, Jessica
