The Homeschool Chick

In my life this week...

Why does it always feel like when the hubby is gone, the house and vehicles fall apart?? It's so comical to me. Thank the Lord that I rest upon him for all of life's nuisances. The week prior I had to buy a new battery for our truck and then while driving back from a ortho appt (for our oldest) my car 'check engine' light came on. Go figure. :( The highlight (personally) is going to my weekly ladies bible study with a few other friends. I have enjoyed this time of communication and prayer with them. One of the other ladies homeschools also, so this provides some fellowship for my boys too.

In our homeschool this week...

Since the deployment, I have made the conscious effort not to stress out; to include our homeschooling. I have four boys- ages 12, 9, 4, 2. I homeschool my older two and 'unschool' with my younger two. It's sad that I have to go over my calendar to see what we did for the week. LOL! I am such a fanatic when it comes to planners and calendars, but this is how I keep our household organized. I suppose we had a typical homeschool week...no field trips this week either. I am glad they we start back up their guitar practices on post next week & soccer soon!

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

1. Bamberg for ortho. appointment
2. Church Wednesday service/ Patch the Pirate club
3. Military Woman Bible Study/ Fellowship
4. Outside play (yeah for sunshine even though it's still 17 degrees outside)

My favorite thing this week was...

Honestly, it's annoying sometimes with the complaining, but we have to take the good with the bad. Training them to be self-sufficient with school 'work' and chores is a daily struggle...

I do love just spending time with my boys, even though some days just seem repetitive, those special moments of devotion, laughter, and hugs makes it priceless and irreplaceable.

What's working/not working for us...

Well, this is hard to say...for the most part everything we set out to do is working. Our English curriculum is Rod & Staff, and I feel that they dislike it. Not so sure why, but I have to go over the chapter and we will do together the 'class practice' and then they do a practice section with their book on their own(7th and 4th grade). Their work does get done, but you'll never hear them saying to me, "Ok, time for English...Yeah!" ~Nope, it doesn't happen.

Does anyone have a suggestion for English curiculum?

Otherwise, we love our Bible, Math, History & Science curriculum.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

The only question or thoughts I have is this...that after much prayer, guidance from a friend, and listening to a lot of sermons concerning homeschooling we have come to the conclusion that homeschooling is the best for our children.

My husband and I also know that their biblical foundation and biblical worldview is key to their education at home. Not the Terra Nova testing, or that P-SAT testing, or that high GPA ~None of that ultimately matters. I read an article the other day...and read this verse, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." --in no time (than today) has this been true.

We are no where perfect (yes, I yell a little too much), but through prayer and supplication --we can overcome it and achieve our family goals.

Hi Jessica, I'm stopping by from THMJ meme and just thought I'd share what we enjoyed for our Language Arts curriculum for several years. My daughter (9th grade now) really enjoyed Total Language Plus during her 6th, 7th and 8th grade years. If you've never heard of them you can check it out here...

http://site.totallanguageplus.com/

They have a growing selection of study guides to choose from (arranged by grade/reading level)...you pick the books you want to read, and the study guide has comprehension questions, spelling, vocabulary, grammar (which we opted to do seperately, as I felt this section was lacking,) as well as many enrichment activities.

Some of the books we enjoyed...The Incredible Journey, Anne of Green Gables, Swiss Family Robinson, The Hobbit, and Around the World in Eighty Days!

While I thought the grammar was lacking, The spelling & vocabulary sections were excellent...I really saw her vocabulary increase while doing these study guides.

I haven't homeschooled in a fear years. But I did HS my oldest son from K-8th grade. We loved Learning Language Arts thru Literature. On a side note I am trying to decide whether to HS my youngest daughter now she is 8. Prayers would be appreciated.
