I am glad at what we have achieved in the last several months as a small homeschool group stationed overseas. Actually this whole year has been a blessing by starting up the homeschool group in our area...
Having the opportunity to get together with other homeschoolers~for homeschoolers that want to participate in a co-op, hangouts, & our field trips. I feel it's a plus and a luxury (especially overseas) and my children and I are enjoying the company when we can.
Looking at some types of co-ops, during my research, there were a vast amount of different co-ops; just like how individual our homeschools are also. I should not have been so surprised at the variety of co-ops out there for homeschoolers.
Well, a group of homeschool moms and myself got together and discussed the opportunity for a co-op. Of course in the beginning, you start out small and work your way up. Another advantage with being a military homeschool family, we are allowed to use the facilities that are available to our children, homeschooled or not. This facilities include the supplies, buildings, and resources.
As a result of this wonderful services, we do not pay building fees and/or have to deal with some bureaucracy that some people have to deal with. I suppose anyway it (the bureaucracy) is very different for each state. We have a great group of people that are affiliated with the school, CYSS, and MWR who have been very supportive with our group. I am very appreciative of that...
Anyway, our first co-op meeting was a successful event!! The children truly enjoyed it so much they said, "Hey mom, are we doing this everyday??" and I said, "No, once a month." ...And then they said, "We had a blast and can't wait until next month!" I find a smile on my face due to the success of the co-op and happiness of my children. It was a good experience. When I spoke to the other moms, they also said their children loved it as well...
In any case, the bottom line is that they are enjoying their education, the opportunities homeschooling allows, and getting to know other homeschool families in our small area.
For our co-op: the classes for now are in four sections with two groups (age-appropriate); Reader's Theatre, Art Appreciation/Arts & Crafts, Gym, and Computer Skills.
