Real Estate Journey, Part 1

Hello everyone.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on the family.

We got here late Thursday night. The international plane flight was a long one, but it went well....sponsors picked us up at the airport and we went directly to the hotel.

Friday: We woke up around 3 AM (and I mean all of us) and stayed up for the rest of the day. We saw very little of Ft. Sam Houston, but I got to meet some folks my husband will be working with at a luncheon. The hubby in-processed and we got to see the PX, PXtra, and a few other places.

Saturday: We all woke up at 1 AM and then decided that was WAY TO EARLY so we went back to sleep at woke around 6AM ... We looked at houses with our realtor, Chad Hughes. He has been super great! We had already selected a few house we liked and he was kind enough to pick us up and drive us around San Antonio (on a Saturday) to see what was behind door number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then finally #6. We picked out this house the first moment we saw it on Realtor.com and on Chad's website also, but of course we wanted to see all other options. Yet, I kept coming back to this one house, comparing all others to it. (Homes in our price range of course).

**We've been researching homes since November and every time (out of 30+ homes), but we kept going back to that one house. My mind was made up-at least.

Well, finally we arrived to the only house I was interested in and as we were driving up low and behold there were people there looking at it. I was devastated. We were supposed to look at houses on Friday, but we were late coordinating with our realtor. So not knowing the full situation, we parked and went inside. I immediately fell in love, even more so than viewing it online. Nothing beats a personal interview with a house than being in it.

We looked around and fromr room to room, I was like--I want this house. I have had it on my "wish list" and it might not be ours because of the open house to other potential buyers. I had hope that it was under the radar enough for us to just snatch it up, but I guess not.

So, we got in the car. Still sad and anxious, we said, "What now?" Our realtor said, "If you want it, we need to go for it." So we went straight to his office (after he had to reschedule some personal time) and we went to fill out the forms. It was a good feeling to put in the offer.

We went all out. We put in our best offer because we want the house and knew others were after it too. What now? We had to play the waiting game.

We had to wait for the next day to find out if we were going to get it or not.

Sunday: Anyway....we contacted the church we wanted to visit first, Leon Valley Baptist, and I must say...it fit perfectly. Everyone was warm and welcoming. We had the opportunity for a deacon in the church to pick us up in the church van and they even let us keep the van for the day --so we could come back for evening services.

For Bible study we went to a "Young Families" group and it was a great study. For Sunday service...we enjoyed the music and the message was strong and biblical and for the evening services a series about "Marriage and Family." Needless-to-say, we feel that the Lord is leading us in the right direction, here in San Antonio, and I pray that it continues to go well.

After Sunday evening services...we got a call from our realtor and guess what?? We got the HOUSE!!!!! We found out that a couple within the church who sat in front of us during the evening services, as we were talking to them about the home, they showed us that they live not to far from where we'll be living. They gave us there phone number - just in case of any needs.

God is good. We have a house, termite, pool inspection on Thursday and after having watched HGTV all day, I am a little worried. HA HA HA!! But with today's personal reading - I came across this verse:

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thess 5:18.

So I am giving thanks that

we were able to get here safely to Texas
we were able to get a hotel accommodations on-post
we have a good sponsor
we found a home and able to put in an offer
we found a home church

*all in 4 days.

Some may say that's a little too quick, but we have been praying for months about all of this...we feel that God is just answering our prayers. I am continually praying about this inspection coming up.

Our Crazy Schedule Due to Military PCS Move

If anyone has kept up with our story, you'd know that we are a military family living overseas (well as least for the next 16 days). In our journey to homeschool, it begin only a few years back...with little to no local support.

We have survived though and I would gather to say we have grown in the Lord more abundantly - for sure. It hasn't been an easy road...started here in Germany, taking our boys out of the public school was a big step in our faith...with four boys.

Our oldest was going into the sixth grade, then one son going into the third, and one toddler, and a bouncing baby boy.

Anyway, regardless of our earliest journey -- 3 different homes, 3 different schools in one year...we started the journey of homeschooling, in Schweinfurt, for the last 3 years.

It's that time again though... PCS - That means Permanent Change of (Duty) Station.

So flashback:

October - Finished my degree and husband came home from deployment.
November - Block leave and got the house ready for the move: organization - keep, give away, trash
December - Back to work for the Husband and getting ready for the movers. We debated on when, but the earliest they can pick up the sooner we get our household goods on the other end.
January - clearing/cleaning house/pet health certificates, final inspections, final appointments, and then fly out.

Some where in-between the holidays and a vast amount of training holidays-there is homeschooling. We started out the first of the school year pretty earlier (July) because we all new the PCS move was coming.

Anyway, this is why I love homeschooling...the flexibility, the extra time spent with dad (from deployment) as a family (hey a year is a long time without husband/father), and the less stress of daily life.

The boys have been reading a lot more lately, which I love because that is the Charlotte Mason way -- a well rounded, liberal (as in whole), learning environment/education.

I am not worried that they are 'behind.' They are learning, and most importantly they are learning about life, but life through a Godly worldview.

We did however start the New Year right by starting our 3rd term for this school year 2011-2012 on Monday.

It amazes me that even though I don't have all my books/supplies/space for our homeschool... it is still very much so with only a bible, a few CD's, and some basic core requirements (and of course a couple of library books) settled in a suitcase.

This whole experience (our first PCS move while homeschooling) has been fantastic...I wouldn't have it any other way (knowing the other alternative).

My Word for 2012: Act

I read Melanie's blog post about her- My word for 2012: Give and I wanted to continue on with my own personal post what my word for 2012 is....

Act.

As you can tell Act is one of my favorite words...it's included in my blog title - A Mother of Action.

The word Act from the Webster's 1828 Dictionary states:

1. To exert power; as, the stomach acts upon food; the will acts upon the body in producing motion.

2. To be in action or motion; to move

He hangs between in doubt to act or rest.

Why Act?

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let [not] arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD [is] a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 1 Samuel 2:3

We all know that phrase, "He/She was caught in the act." To me, this can be a positive OR negative situation.

In the Bible, we see that there are examples of both (good and bad) but as the verse goes, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose. Romans 8:28

As a woman, I lean more to the women of the Bible, and I believe we can learn a lot by paying close attention to these few examples. One lesson that sticks out...

Is the woman caught in the act.

In John 8:4, "They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act."

This is when Jesus has conflict with religious leaders who were trying to stump His take on the belief and morals in the eyes of Law. They (religious leaders) had already broken the law because both the man and woman who had committed the adultery would be stoned, not just one party...

They were trying to stump Jesus. Silly religious leaders...

Back to the story (and this is what I love), Jesus STUMPS them. What we sometimes fail to see, as humans, Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and ending, the Almighty! TEAM JESUS HERE!

Jesus would not condemned this woman, He was showing His love and compassion for people. He said,

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

And they which heard [it], being convicted by [their own] conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8: 4-11

One by one, they were convicted of their own sins and then left. Her act of sin, caused her to be saved by Jesus. Now, it's her decision to ACT for good. No doubt after her salvation, she thought about her actions. What she did from that moment on was to either ---act for good or for bad.

As a woman of God, I choose to act for good. My actions are being looked at by

1. God

2. Husband

3. Children

4. Others

So I choose to act for Jesus. To follow him. To act Christ-like.

More than ever in our present time that this rings true ~

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12

Throughout the Bible, we read and re-read the blessings and/or consequences to our own actions and how they relate to the people around us and that's fascinating to me. It also makes me realize why we homeschool and what I need to be for our boys.

Actions speak louder than words.

It's my actions that prove that I follow Jesus.

I was visiting

I love to take photos with my not so nice camera, but I love the memories that it takes. I could only thing of one event this year that was the best and that was the day my husband came home from a one (365 days) deployment from Afghanistan/Kuwait.

It was a very happy day indeed for our family, so here are several shots from that day.

Why "No Parents Allowed"?

When I was in elementary school, mom was there on a regular basis helping out in the classroom or the library, chaperoning field trips, or leading an advanced reading program for gifted students. And she wasn’t the only mom doing her part to improve our education.

The Department of Education in 1986 released “What Works: Research About Teaching and Learning.” The report was divided up by setting – Home, Classroom, and School. The first principle listed under the Classroom section was, “Parental involvement helps children learn more effectively.” Again, this was in the classroom.

So “What’s wrong with parents visiting a school” in 2011? That’s the question columnist Jay Matthews of the Washington Post asked in his article of December 4.

According to Matthews, two sets of parents – one in Fairfax, the other in Arlington County, VA – had similar experiences: When they asked the local school if they could sit in to observe a class with their child, they each received a quick and certain “No” in response. In each case the child was a prospective student, and the parents wanted to see if the school would be a good fit. They wanted to be informed as they made decisions “to direct the education of their child.” Instead, the schools walled them out.

Parents’ presence was encouraged in 1986: “This first-hand observation shows parents how the teacher teaches and gives parents ideas on what they can do at home.” Today, a wall has been built and parents are simply not allowed inside.

Why? Teachers and administrators gave Matthews several reasons, including teacher privacy issues, vaccination issues, and the fear that visits could be “too disruptive to the educational process.” But none could cite any examples of such a disruptive visit.

On the extreme end of the spectrum, we heard separately from a parent whose child’s teacher recently informed her that what goes on in that teacher’s classroom is none of the mother’s business.

And sadly, court precedent agrees with that teacher. According to the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Fields v. Palmdale (2005), the liberty of parents to direct the upbringing of their children “does not extend beyond the threshold of the school door.”

In the 1986 report President Reagan asserted that “education begins in the home and flourishes when we draw upon the combined efforts of children, parents, teachers, and administrators.” But today’s education bureaucrats are squeezing parents out of the equation.

We believe “the liberty of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children is a fundamental right,” even in public schools. It is for this reason that we promote the Parental Rights Amendment to codify that fact in the text of the U.S. Constitution. We must all stand together, however your child is educated, to defend the right of fit parents to make decisions for their children in all educational settings.

2. Pass it on. On Thursday I will send you another email designed not only for those already familiar with parental rights, but also for friends who may have never thought about it. So please plan now to open that email, read it, and pass it along to as many as you can. The issue of parental rights should concern everyone in America; our nation’s future depends on it!

A Review: We Gather Together – Sanity and Celebration At Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays besides a couple more. I feel that this holiday prepares us for Christmas in the sense of why we celebrate this particular holiday and/or other events. In a sense, Thanksgiving Day has become known mostly as “Turkey Day” –a.k.a. – political correctness in today's world, but if you have ever read history and readings from literature of this time; it’s much more than a consumerism boost for the economy or even turkey. No, it’s about God and his blessings on this country of ours.

I especially loved reading this e-book, because they give the basis to why Thanksgiving came about, and the e-book helps take the stress of creating a menu/shopping list, and poems/songs available for personal use. We know why the Pilgrims came to the Americas'-for religious freedom, but they were ill-prepared for the environment and like a young adult going out into society as a free person…some guidelines and preparation are needed for success.

I am amazed at the kindness of the Indian people who came to their aid. It was probably more out of curiosity, maybe fear, trades, but I think it was more lack of the pilgrim’s knowledge and they felt sorry for them. I don’t know really, but I am trying to imagine from the tribe's view. I am sure it’s a lot more than that though. Maybe it’s the reality that we all share that inner most feeling of trying to be good to our neighbors. And more than anything, the Pilgrims needed their help to survive and I am sure they were very thankful for their neighbors and God's blessings... –hence, Thanksgiving.

As the pilgrims were God-fearing people, of course, they praised God for their good fortune to make it through another season. I like to read about their hardships, their struggles and how they kept their faith –if not made it stronger in their daily struggle to live there. This is why I am amazed at what God does for us and to make our lives better (sometimes not for ourselves, but for Him).

I find it fascinating that our first President (as well as others) made a proclamation in realizing the importance of Thanksgiving and honor to God. He got it right. To read the first president of the United States proclamation AND then view on YouTube our current president’s speech and the omittance of thanksgiving to God for Thanksgiving--it makes me upset at the comparsion. No mention of God whatsoever in his speech (current president).

"Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor - and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." -Resource

President George Washington’s proclamation goes on….but it shows that yes, the United States of America was founded by Christians and that we ARE a Christian nation still—at least for now.

The e-book was enjoyable to read… the Young’s tell their own story of struggle for a season, and how they understood, that even through a trial, God is still good and does provide for our needs. I couldn’t agree more. I would like to incorporate some of the songs and proclaimation for next year's Thanksgiving meal, but I just might have some of the Thanksgiving songs/poems placed around the home in a fashionable manner to always be reminded that Thanksgiving is an everyday part of living.

Overall I enjoyed reading We Gather Together: Sanity and Celebration at Thanksgiving Time, by Hal and Melanie Young. We will go over this more in the coming weeks, when we go over this period in History. Right now we are just at the discovery of America (New World); Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon, Conquistadors, etc. --soon we will be looking at the first colonies.

This Thanksgiving holiday season we were fortunate enough to be invited to a friend’s home and had a wonderful time. Yes, we had most of the traditional food listed, but the friendship and gathering together to give thanks to God—is the most important part of the day. To me every day is Thanksgiving. I would recommend to never forgetting that…

Thanksgiving Day or not, we should always be thankful for our salvation, our lives, our family & friends and to remember that America – whether or not you agree - is a Christian nation.

Just a Note...

There is someone who is posting as "Anonymous" to my blog saying that there are punctuation error(s) on my blog heading/title. Though I appreciate your grammar policing...I had someone make my blog background out of the goodness of her heart and I haven't and really don't want to 'correct' the error.

So please excuse the BAD grammar. It's supposed to be "Godly men, husbands, fathers..." It is a photo and can't be "corrected" without a whole bunch of hoopla and frankly, it's not my main concern--- it's their hearts, not their or my English grammar that I am more concerned about. Thank you in advance. :) I am going to be like Mater (in Cars 2) --- "I'll keep my dents...they remind me of my friend."

My salvation and my family

This week during our Prayer meeting (on Wednesday's) we have been praying for a certain hard situation for anyone. A woman of my age has had a debilitating heatlh issue occur and now she is living in a nursing home. Her family wishes are very different from the husband and it has made a most disturbing family event.

As I have a medical background I have always promoted the importance of having an advance directive (or living will). I am glad to mention that my husband and I have the same outlook as to where our children will go to in the event that both of us die and who should care for our children. I also trust the judgment of my husband, so if I ever had life cut short---I don't worry about my children in the care of my husband.

It's an unfortunate event to think about, but the alternative of NOT being able to voice our desires when and IF it ever happened is beyond comprehension for me.

Yesterday I received in the mail the documentary that I ordered recently and was suprised to get it quickly. We ate dinner and cleaned up and decided to watch the movie as a family. The movie I am referring to is titled: IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America.

I have been watching the trailer and clips online for this movie for some time now and was eager to watch the entire film, being overseas, I was glad that I was able to pre-order and they were able to ship to an APO address.

What is the documentary about and who is the audience for it?

Well, for me, I believe every parent who has a child in the public school system should view this movie and ESPECIALLY Christian parents.

It shows in detail throughout the movie the history of the public school system from the beginning of America till today. You can see how all anti-God teachings came into the school system and how this has affected our children and social issues surrounding them. It's about a film producer who homeschools his children, they buy a yellow school bus and take a trip across the country to meet with experts and Christians leaders on the subjects of America, Christianity, Homeschooling, and the Public School.

You have pastors who are speaking up about this issue and it was interesting to hear from prominent school administrators, principals, and teachers who are CHRISTIAN and give a FIRST-HAND accounts about public schools and their intimate personal decisions they make concerning the public schools and their Christianity.

There is really no argument about having children 'be the salt and light' in a public school --time and time again--this is a statistic that doesn't measure up in the name of Christianity. I remember reading once that, "If you are preparing for war, you first need to train your soldiers ---you don't just drop them off in the middle of the war with no training or personal growth." And yet, if you really look at a public school-- your child has no battle-buddies and are left for dead (spiritually dead that is). If everything that a Christian parent teaches at home is being contradicted at school--is that not confusing your child? Who is right--You or the System?

The film also brings up the era of Nazi Germany and it reminded me of a another quote I read, "He alone, who owns the youth, gains the Future!" - Adolf Hilter. Hilter knew the very importance of gaining the hearts and minds of the youth for ideology for his twisted Utopia society.

I was baffled at some of the quotes and actual clips of the NEA (National Education Association) and their leaders' viewpoints. It was very disturbing to me as a Christian parent. No wonder children are not doing well in schools in America. Public schools have become a mass production of a general social experiment and the dealer is our American government & politicians.

WOW!! --you say (that's going a little overboard --isn't?) **Not from where I stand.

So, if you want to discuss the film, please leave a comment (but only after you have seen the film and have done a little research on our government schools).

Oh, by the way, The Exodus Mandate, was a key factor (besides scripture & Homeschool friends/family), in making our decision to go from public school to homeschooling our children. I would definitely visit them if you are contemplating homeschooling or looking at Christian education for your children.

I challenge you, as a Christian parent, to watch this film. It only soldify our beliefs that we want to instill in our children via homeschooling.

Curriculum, One Subject at a Time: Math - Life of Fred, Key To Algebra, & Math Mammoth

My oldest has completed the Pre-Algebra with Biology last year and we both love Life of Fred, and I was torn between starting the new book Pre-Algebra 2 with Economics or just move on to Beginning Algebra, but after these last couple of years ---and how the economy is --I felt we couldn't pass it up.

He does feel the concepts are a bit more challenging this year as the chapters progress, but he usually finishes one chapter per day.

If you are not familiar with Life of Fred: Pre-Algebra with Economics,

It consist of 34 chapters and every 6-7 chapters complete he then has to pass what is called a "Bridge." There are 1-5 Bridges, but if you pass the first one you can move on to the next chapter (for me this helps me know that he is learning waht is being taught--so, I do not let the bridges pass us by --we stop and visit. ;)

He is already half-way through the book and so he has also started Key To Algebra Series (actually yesterday at the start of our 2nd Term). So far it's just review for him.

He enjoys Life of Fred and I am so thankful for coming across this series. He is my reader and worksheets are somewhat 'boring' math and it's not his style. Life of Fred is interesting and funny with elaborate stories and word problems that parallel life and it makes sense for him (just fantastic). At the of the 34th chapter you will find the Final Bridge and if you get the X amount of questions right you graduate the book and move on to the next book.

Life of Fred is supposed to be self-teaching and since he started a couple of years back, he has only asked me a question or two and the knowledge was there to find--he just had to re-read the question and with each chapter you'll have a solutions section to check his math. It's not alot of problems per chapter, but I feel it's very complete in each chapter at teaching math.

Right now going into our 2nd Term he is pretty much still in review from last year by doing Math Mammoth: Gold Series 4B. I received this series when I was a TOS Homeschool Crew (product reviewer of homeschool products). I really enjoy how Maria Miller (the creator of Math Mammoth)designed the worksheets for mental math and a different way to come at the children with math. We all know that word problems and mental math are great!

Well, there you have it. As far as my kindergarten student...we are mostly doing living math. He counts his toes & fingers, we read books about numbers and we count the animals in a story, and he is loving math.

We went to the library the other day and I laid down the books that we were getting (which totaled only 8) and he counted them in front of the librarian. She was impressed. LOL!! Oh well, small steps and little by little. I pray that all my boys learn to love math because it's everywhere in our daily lives and in everything.

I am currently reading (but very slowly) Revealing Arithmetic: Math Concepts from a Biblical Worldview and it's definitely an interesting read so far. I hope to have a review sooner than later. ;)

Red Ribbon Week As a Homeschooler

I am glad that I don't have to worry as much as a government school parent about the heavy influence of other students who do drugs or push drugs to my own children mainly because we homeschool--and I know that I wouldn't push drugs and/or alcohol on our boys. Seems like a general statement, but the more I read about the horror stories with drugs/alcohol with now starting in the elementary years rather than later in schools--it's somewhat a sigh of relief.

I know that I cannot totally ignore the fact that they will never be exposed to such things--hey, we are MILITARY right? My children do get a glimpse of what drugs/alcohol do to people's lives, they have seen commericals on AFN about domestic abuse and the like--(not all related to drugs/alcohol, but it's a major factor in most cases).

All I know is that they (my boys) won't have much of the peer pressure as their counterparts in gov. schools do and that's just a simple fact. I am glad that most (if not all schools drug-free zone) --but just because it's celebrated (Red Ribbon Week) --doesn't necessary mean it's drug free.

So this week, in honor of Red Ribbon Week, we will also do some projects in our homeschool about being drug free and alcohol free. Mainly because it's against the Bible to be drunk and having your mind altered (drugs) --A Proverbs study is always a good start and I have below some sites that I will probably use this week in relation to this particular study. *I think it's also a great time to teach them about drug safety in the home, we usually keep all drugs (prescription or not) out of reach from the children--it's a scary thing to have children mess with drugs (accidental or not).

Co-Op: September 2011

It's that time of year again...getting together for some fun and learning...our Support/Co-Op Group started last month. We started this Co-Op about a 1 1/2 years ago in our small little military post.

I didn't start out in it, but I was new to homeschooling altogether and then of course with PCS moves -it kinda fell on my lap. I don't mind it because I feel that homeschooling is so important that I don't mind helping others out in their journey and being an advocate for homeschooling.

Well, we attend once per month in our homeschool Co-Op and because it's a small group we only have a couple of classes and then we sometimes have lunch afterwards and let the kids have some quality time with friends.

We just had our first Co-Op in September and it went rather well- I might add.
Thank the Lord that we were able to keep our location and time the same. There was a major overhaul within the DoDDs school here at our post.

High School kids used to travel about 30-45 mins to get to the only high school available in this area. Now, what was once the middle school is NOW the high school and the Elementary school now houses K-8th grades.

In doing so, the school has to use the School age facility for gym as well as the gym in the school. As a homeschool group -- and with only attending the facility once per month..of course we are a low priority (not saying our group doesn't matter) but the DoDDs has priority use over the time/slots available.

Anyway, the schools' gym time breaks RIGHT SMACK with the time we would use the gym. So, I call that a big BLESSING for us. Otherwise, we would have had to change venues...and I really didn't want to do that.

For September we did:

a. Art Appreciation: A wonderful lady, Heather, has joined the group this year and has an extensive amount of knowledge on Language Arts/Literature/Art --she used to lead a huge Co-Op in Texas --so she will bring a great deal of knowledge to the group. The children did a study on Michelangelo paintings and the Sistine Chapel located in Rome (techinically the Vactican).

She did Art Appreciation and taught Geography last month and then we will alternate Art with Science every other month and we will have another parent teaching Science for the month of October's Co-Op, plus Geography.

b. I do the Gym class and we did stations between jump rope, sit ups, push ups, and other various activities.

c. Another two ladies, Leneigh and Bianca, who are also new to the group have taken the task to teaching our younger group. They did a story time and a nature walk/activity and gym for tthe younger ones was bean bags and different fine/gross motor skills. Both teachers were fantastic! Everyone had a blast.

The kids always have fun learning and participating and we all are looking forward to this month's Co-Op and field trip to a local farm.

I am completely glued to this series. The video above is Part 2 of a series called: If This Is Homeschooling, Then Why Am I Always in the Van? by Tina Farewell via The Homeschool Channel (Such A Blessing to Have).

Wow, in part one she mentioned a medical diagnosis I never knew existed, and yet I'd probably be diagnosed with if I went and talked to my doctor. LOL!! Okay, it's not funny- I understand, but it does make me realize that I do need to slow down.

I don't do a whole lot during the week, but we do have a fair amount of outside 'work.'

Here's our daily plan:

1. Sunday: Church from 1000-1230 and then again around 1700-2000 (if I stay longer to fellowship)

2. Monday: light school (Bible, Math, & English only) *this is our free day --nothing is planned, no where to go (my favorite day of the week actually--wonder why...)

3. Tuesday: we have school and then I am (currently) taking an evening class to finish up my degree.

4. Wednesday: school, then I was taking the boys to guitar lessons (we dropped that) and then drive two locations for soccer practices, pickup and then church 1900-2000.

5. Thursday: school, and then again my evening college class.

6. Friday: school and soccer practices in the evening.

7. Saturday: soccer games, grocery shopping, and cleaning catch-up and getting ready for Sunday.

Add:

1x per month Co-Op class
1x per month field trips
FRG meetings, volunteering, taking classes for FRG
Grocery Shopping (bi-monthly)
Library visits (weekly)
Blogging (about every two weeks)
Facebook (ashamed to admit...)

Takes up a fair amount of my time--doesn't it?? I can't imagine doing Co-Op every week, but I suppose some do.

Another issue brought up...Sleep? Do I ever get any?? Honest answer is no. For one, my husband is deployed and has been for almost a full year now...and I am at my wits end. It's exhausting being without your husband because you were made to be a team.

I do pray and I have gotten closer to the Lord because I couldn't have gotten this far without Him. No way, no how. I have four active boys...sometimes I do scream (seriously working on my meekness), but they argue over such petty things ---it's so irriating most of the time. Praying for my sons...

I do have to give props to my older two, because since their dad is away; they have been great at helping at least keep the mess at bay. We have a big house (Army housing) and keeping it clean is a full-time job by itself!

Lord help me. With my husband's redeployment coming up and an upcoming PCS move back to the States, not only am I constantly thinking about keeping the house in order I also have to start decluttering before the movers ever come to pack us up.

I think if I had a good week without any children here, I could get it done, but alas--my children are always with me (not complaining here because this is our choice), but sometimes it's like raking leaves during a wind storm--it equals frustration.

Anywhoo---I just wanted to share what was on my mind....and that I will and have been changing up some priorities in this household to make me a less hurried woman.

Volkach, Germany: Viking Festival & a Juggler

This past weekend we had a wonderful time with some of our homeschool friends! My Pastor's daughter sent me an email telling me about a local fest going on (only for the weekend) and that it was a Viking Fest.

Oh how I love to attend outings like this...so fun and interesting to do. Volkach isn't far from us either..so we headed out there for the day. I was one son short because he had a soccer game in Hohenfels...too far for me-so a friend took him with her son for their games. My son's game ended with a tie 3-3 (not bad for a first game).

Well, the Viking Fest was great. We had brats for lunch (I ate steamed mushrooms with a white sauce), the boys were able to do some hands-on learning...saw some falcons (although we were not able to see the show), and we saw a juggler perform! He was definitely a HOOT!! Too bad I can't understand Deutsche. LOL!!

I do however have a video and it took me by surprise. If you view the video you can see a certain little boy (in a gray shirt-our son) who 'stoled' the show...it was cute!!

I did eventually sit right by my son when the talented juggler started lighting things on fire for his last performance!! Didn't want HIM to help with that!

9/11 - A Day of Celebration and Purpose

It’s another night of chores that I am experiencing loneliness during this deployment. I was washing the dishes and when I do- I usually listen to sermons on my iPod. I realized that tomorrow is September 11, 2011. Ten years after the horrific terrorist attack on U.S. soil at NYC I am washing dishes at night.

The sermon I was listening to the pastor said this {paraphrasing of course} - We can go vegan, drink bottled water, take our vitamins, and exercise, but the simple truth is that we all experience death. We try to ignore death as humans. It’s our culture. And then an unforeseen event occurs and then it’s too late. *He wasn’t talking about 9-11, the message of course focused on salvation and repentance---but ultimately about death and what that means to us-saved or unsaved.

One morning the day after my husband left for scheduled training I was having a normal day- we were stationed in Wurzburg, Germany and I worked at home as a family childcare provider. I was 8 months pregnant with our second son and took care of three other children. I got a phone call that morning and I went to turn the T.V. on -as you probably can imagine or experienced yourself-it was replayed over and over again. I saw the first tower go down. I felt the horror, pain, and confusion of what was happening. On T.V. I saw a women so scared crying and holding her newborn close to her chest overcome by fear and confusion. I cried.

I immediately felt the need to contact my husband, and I did. He thought it was awful, but did not think this was anything close to a terrorist attack and so we chat for a few minutes and then that was it. Some more time passed and the second tower was attacked and on its way down…then I heard of the Pentagon attack and so forth. That was it for me. I sat there and cried some more. I was pregnant, alone and in another country, and most importantly was I unsaved (but I didn’t know it at the time).

A moment later a chaplain came on the AFN channel and made a general statement and then said a prayer. I prayed at that moment. After the Pentagon was attacked, my husband actually contacted me. He told me that everyone’s phones/beepers we going off and everyone was talking about it. They had no T.V. in the field, but they knew what had happened and I will never forget what he said to me, “We are going to war.”

Fast forward ten years…we are still at war and my husband is currently deployed. Here I am again, alone and in Germany. There are three things though that have changed {for the better I might add}:

1. I am now a Saved person (and most of my immediately family is)

2. My faith is stronger more than ever

3. I am still taking care of children, but all of them are mine and we homeschool

There is a lot to be thankful for- I know. It truly upsets me of that the current news mentioned that ceremony for the 10th year anniversary will NOT included any type of prayers or even the mention of God. How sad for our country. It’s on the downhill slope and speeding to destruction.

This is one of the numerous reasons we homeschool. Our boys know why Daddy is gone, they know of the events that happened and the reasons behind it. If tragedy occurs, I want my family with me. I want our family to spend our last times in prayers, encouragement, and song. I remember seeing the movie Quo Vadis, where the Roman Empire under Nero persecuted the Christians at the Colosseum for sport. In the movie, the Christians did not cry out in anger against God, they didn’t ask God why it was happening to them…they stood their ground in their faith and before the lions were released or as they were being burned alive…they sang praises unto God. I want to be that kind of Christian.

So ten years later, even though this war is STILL going, the economy is less than par, and the effects of sin are upon us…I do not fear. Yes, I think about our future— who doesn’t? Hey, we have four boys I’d like to help in raising to be men-Godly men at that. There is that uncertainty because we don’t know what tomorrow brings, but I can tell you this I don’t have fear. It’s like the pastor said: We are worried about the weather so check the weather (almost religiously) in order to plan our future, but that is today and we have no control on tomorrow. So we try to plan for it, but have you planned for the weather in eternity? Wow, that struck a nerve and I am saved, but what about friends and family who are not saved?? That’s where the sadness comes in…

Events in our lives change our path and we make decisions about our lives in order to serve a better purpose. What is your purpose? It’s weird to think that tomorrow, 10 years later to the date, I am again alone (without my husband) in Germany, homeschooling our four boys, but the good news is that now I am saved and I walk by faith and not by sight.

We don’t always know what God has planned for our lives…but we should know where we will spend eternity –for it’s our choice where we end up. His advice: “repent or perish.”

What is that well-known verse: John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Please join me in prayer for the events that happened 10 years ago. I don’t think it’s just a moment in history for only Americans, but for the world. And another thing...I will be at church during this time of prayer...even though it's a day of remembrance of this sad event it's also a day of celebration--my purpose.

Is Pinterest Homeschool Friendly?

I would definitely vote for YES!

Okay, most if not all of you know what Pinterest is...and sad to say (depending on your opinion) I am a frequent visitor and 'pinner.'

Why would I ask if it's homeschool friendly?? Well, I always ask that question...and the answer is definitely a go. It gives me ideas on just about everything from kid's lunch menus to oh let's say curriculum? I 'collect' photos of purple, my dream home (what it would look like), and fantastic homeschool ideas.

I just started a series on explaining and reviewing materials on each subject for this year (you can view the 1st post HERE) and while I was looking at my fellow friend's pins, Sunflower Faith, it got me thinking...{Hey, make a board of my curriculum!} --haven't really seen a whole lot of that yet. Books-yes. Curriculum pinned together-no.

Maybe it's out there, who knows--I am still learning.

Well, Pinterest is nice because (of course) we get that instant satisfaction of pinning our favorites on our wall. It's window shopping on highspeed mode.

Now, as a Christian, I sometimes think about pinterest as being 'covetousness' and 'idolatry.'

You know that children's song; "oh be careful little eyes what you see..." Ha!! It's burned into my brain I suppose.

I was never a person to be into the latest fad or style --even as a kid. Even now, my life verse is 2 Cor. 4:18. So, when I look at sites like Facebook or Pinterest (two of which I am a frequent flyer)---there are some thoughts that come to mind;

1. Covetousness is being selfish and unthankful for what God has given you.

{Am I that?} Definitely not. I thank God for everything I have (and surprise) everything I don't have too.

2. Idolatry is putting other stuff before God.

{Am I that?} No, nothing comes in between God and me. *Not even my husband or children....least of all Pinterest.

So, back to our regularly scheduled post: Pinterest is fantastic.

Our Curriculum, One Subject at a Time: Bible

I want to start a series about what we use for each class in our HOMEschool and of course I will start with the most important class of all. Bible.

1. We start off each morning with a prayer and pray for a missionary per day.

2. The boys then do penmanship with their Journibles: Proverbs book. (They are on Chapter 2 now)

3. After that, I read for about 15 mins. of A Beka: Paul's Missionaries

4. Finally, we look in our Vol. I of Balancing the Sword. We currently are in Proverbs first, then probably go to Joshua, then Judges to coincide with our A Beka.

*I do not write in our Vol. I for the Balancing the Sword, but the boys write down in their own journals with the questions/answers. Of course we first read the chapter and then we discuss the questions...

I love the quotes and the bottom of almost every page, the format is easy to read and use, there are cross references (to dig deeper in the scriptures), and we do like the figures/drawings scattered throughout the text.

He mentions that this is only a study tool and in no way replaces the reading of the Word-and I agree. It is great in making us read the Chapter (we do one chapter per day, plus the questions in the volume) in order to prepare us for the questions (and thank God there is an answer key (for us teachers).

We probably won't finish Volume I this year...but looking forward to that day that we do and then we will start over from a different angle with Volume II.

I first encountered Balancing of the Sword when I came across this website: Bible Bee. I immediately knew that we could use this for our bible curriculum and I also bought the Musical Scripture CDs (a couple of them) for enhancement learning.

Well, there you have it...our Bible class. It usually only takes us about 30-45 mins per day. It's one of our longer class, but our most important.

they dont eat or drink anything when the sun is up
so from sun up to sun down, they are fasting

Son: is that 1 reason they're skinny?

Dad: its illegal here for anyone to eat or drink

Dad: if you get caught off camp by local law officials they will throw you in prison

Son: ? hmm pretty strict law

Dad: yeah, but we can eat and drink when we are on our camps

I had to cook dinner quickly and I missed talking to my hubby, but our oldest was able to chat with his Daddy. These are the moments that all parents should cherish for life. Whether are communication is face-to-face or through social medias, taking the time to really understand our children, teaching them the word of God, and making promises for family get-together's is a real blessing. And we know it. This is one of the reason why we homeschool. Family unity.

We didn't have that growing up and as a military family our children do not know the life of being in one place for a long time. They have always known the life of military. Yet, as parents, we understand how important it is to be that foundation to them. As long as they know dad and mom are for them-no matter what-that is all they need, aside from God, that is.

Seems to me that our boys understand this concept well. It's so funny to me about the comment of knitting!! HA HA HA!! It seriously made me cry, because I don't knit, or sew. I can put on a button on a shirt though!! LOL!! At least I know that my husband knows me well enough to say, "I doubt it."

Life is complicated. It is. I think it makes it even harder to be apart from your loved ones. It's really been a struggle for me. Sometimes I find myself angry at the fact that I am a married woman/mother being forced to raise our children alone and feel the loneliness of not having him physically here. If you have ever read the book on the Five Love Languages--you should know that MY love languages are physical touch and quality time---two of which I DO NOT have. :(

But as this deployment winds down and that the daily struggles of homeschooling are known, but are positive...it's what makes life so grand. During this deployment, I can honestly say that I have gotten closer to God through my disappointments, struggles, the loneliness, sometimes anger. We know that God does this for us to remind us that we do need Him and that we need to grow in our Christian walk.

I can truthfully say I could not have done this deployment alone. Yes, I am 1,000 miles away from home, in a foreign country, no family, but it doesn't matter with God, because He is with us always and wherever we are.

I just wanted to share because, to me, this was a precious moment that I will cherish even if it's a mediocre chat between a Dad and a Son. I love them both very much (as well as all my boys). I thank God for them everyday.

Why I believe we still need Jesus.

Disclaimer: You might want to know why I am posting this on my homeschool blog, but it definitely has something to do why we homeschool at all...to know Christ as our Saviour.

I am sitting here at 1:25AM at the computer desk. You ask why? Well, it's mostly me thinking about the today's event I had today (well yesterday). I am currently taking a 2-day course called ASIST training. What is that?

ASIST Suicide Prevention

To combat suicide, The Chapel is offering a vital two day course, in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, or ASIST. The program is open to any Soldier or civilian interested in understanding suicide and helping others.

Many don't know my past, but I have been in a situation in my teen years that made me grow up a little too fast, too hard. It had to deal with suicide.

I have grown up realizing that in any situation, some situations will happen whether you want them to or Not and or if we are ready for it. Going through this type of training, made me wonder about why this isn't taught in high schools today...

Anyway, what really bugs me and why I can't sleep—is the simple statement one Chaplain said during his segment of the training.

Basically there are three phases to assisting a person who is thinking about suicide.

1. Connecting
2. Understanding
3. Assisting

Bottom line if we are made known of someone who wants to commit suicide or thinking about it and they reach out to you...there is some hope to life for them, to live outside the hurt, pain, and/or trauma in their lives and there is something we can do--Listen.

In my group we had a full spectrum of people who had personal experiences with one or MANY suicides (family and friends)to not knowing anyone personally, from people who genuinely care for others-to not wanting to get involved too much-to the other end of the spectrum of –who cares- if they want to do it, then let them do it. (I'll show you where to get the ammo.)

Military life is hard. We all came to agree that anyone (REALLY) is at risk for suicide.

PCS moves, deployments, illness, death of a loved one, death of a pet, adultery, rape, job loss or no jobs, overseas living, racism and the list goes on and on.

With Military life you can actually deal with one or more of these life stressors and most of the time ALL at once! I feel though...that the only way to handle this is really how that person deals with life in general, do they have a support system, do they have others who listen to them (when needed), do they have a faith-based support system? (which is key to me)

Anyway, back to the Chaplain. He mentioned all these stressors as an example. One example that goes on a lot inside and probably outside military life; Soldier is deployed, wife is back home wants a divorce, taking all the kids and leaving a financial ruin for him to come back to.

Sad situation right? Yes, very. What do you say to a person who is dealing with all that? Who says he has no reason to live? We've learned that you need to ask specific question.

1. How are you doing?
2. Are you thinking about suicide?
3. Do you have plan?
4. What is that plan?
5. Get Resources for them and quick.
6. Follow up

That's basically it in a nutshell....

Again back to the Chaplain. He said that some or MOST Chaplains want to tell them about Jesus—as a joke. Well, I beg a differ Mr. Chaplain. I think that IS the right thing to do.

I totally understand the urgency to get the help. I do. BUT that only goes so far.

Back to the Soldier situation – wife is leaving, divorce is there, children are in the mix, finances are ruined. Yeah, who wouldn't want to think about ending it all?

BUT---like my husband has said before...Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Going to the mental health person or Chaplain --you may get something out of them, but there's never a real fix to the problem. One quote that I love is this: “Christ is a substitute for everything, but nothing is a substitute for Christ.” -H.A. Ironside --And I whole-heartily agree with that!

I have been to seminars where, as a family, living for Christ is the way to go. You are covered under the protection of Christ. Think of it in this way (the way it was explained to us)... think of an umbrella; the husband is head of houshold, to love his wife as the way he loves Christ; the wife is to submit to authority because God is head of Husband, so then comes Husband to wife. (YES—that is Biblical) and then so forth with Children...to obey their parents. This ACTUALLY creates harmony –when everyone is doing there part.

So now you have a wife back home who is having an affair or whatever, she thinks she doesn't need her husband because he is deployed and not there...and then the children are not seeing a family of unity but a breakdown in the family...never mind that they don't go to church or worse are not being raised up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 4:6)

There's the breakdown, no unity, no respect for the Word, and we wonder why there's a breakdown in families...the military divorce rate is through the roof.

To say that Christ has nothing to do with suicide prevention is FOOLISH, STUPID, and DANGEROUS.

No one likes to talk about it, Chaplains can't express their 'religion' on the Soldier...so what is he or she there for?? A glorified conselor with some religious tendencies??

Yes, I was irked. Disclaimer: I KNOW that not all Chaplains are this way and there and MANY FINE Chaplains in the Military and serving our Soldiers well. But come on---if you know the truth, read a Bible here and there. You KNOW the consequences of a person being UNSAVED and killing themselves.

Doesn't that bother them? Doesn't that bother anyone?? It does me, hence ---I am up late and I have to be up early in the AM.

Making fun of Christ to me was not the answer and a little appalling to say the least. Telling a person to just talking to a mental health rep isn't the answer either –quick fix (maybe) –but not the answer.

As a Healthcare major and with previous experiences from Nursing homes to ER to observing life in general...people just want to be loved. Bottom Line. To be respected, to be loved, for someone to care.

Through my experiences I have learned this along the way...my only wish is that I knew this when I needed to.

So, what I am saying is that...don't make fun of people, don't be a bully, and be the Good Samaritan. We STILL need those in this dying world we call home. A fantastic verse and our family verse is this:

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.” - 2 Cor. 4:18

We need to stop looking at the temporary and start looking at the eternal, because in the end that IS what matters.

R is for Raising Children for Christ

It seems as though most Christian-based homeschoolers (that I know of) this is the goal and is a priority in their homeschool. Once we got Saved (my husband and I) we were really digging dip into scripture about everything; how to be a husband and wife (as a unit), how to be a Godly woman (me), and of course—how to raise up children for the Lord.

I personally have always wanted to homeschool (mainly for personal reasons and experiences), but also I didn't have full confidence and saw firsthand how taking your child to school –you lose the right of your child's heart and mind. I didn't like that. At all.

Anyway, through some bad public school experiences and multiple transfers of schools (due to military transitions), and talking to other homeschool parents... we dived in-head first.

We all know the well-versed quotes in the Bible about teaching our children in the ways of the Lord. Some examples:

Deuteronomy 4: 9-10

Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

[Specially] the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and [that] they may teach their children.

I would gather to say that the ultimate goal for parents to their child (if they are Christians) –is to teach the love of God to their children. Does that really happen anywhere else than at home?

So my R is Raising Children for Christ. In an unknown world that is of today—I have peace in teaching our children the ways of the Lord and the truth of salvation. Homeschooling is not easy and quite frankly frustrating at times—but we wouldn't want it any other way for our family. Lord knows what the future has in store for us, but right now, we definitely feel at ease with our decision to homeschool.

Not Back to School Blog Hop: Week 2 ~ Our Learning Room

Week 2 of the Not Back to School Blog Hop is about sharing your (my) school room.

Well here is a picture of our-what we like to call- Learning Room. This is our third year of homeschooling and we have tripled our book supply. YAY! But I know we are running out of room, so hopefully when we move again (soon) we'll see if we will be blessed with a bigger space for our school.

Mind you, our education is not limited to only this room. The boys like to read their Science and Reading assignments in their own rooms, they do their Latin lessons in our living room (DVD player) and so forth. Of course, our Nature Studies take us outside to local parks/lakes/backyard.

Since last year I have moved around our desks (including my own) so hopefully this layout is more conducive to learning. We shall see. :)

Mother of Action is what I titled my blog because I feel as a Godly woman, like in II Timothy 1:5, I have to model the desire of being Christ-like and teaching them in all ways to honor our Lord in everyday living...hence, Mother of Action.

Yes, we have four sons (and no daughters). It has been quite the journey considering I am the oldest of SIX sisters (with no brothers). I have been known to ask my husband, "Is this normal for a boy?" My boys are fun, loud, obnoxious (at times), and they definitely keep me on my toes!

My blog is mostly about our homeschool journey as a military family living in Germany--it's like my own journal to keep track of the things we do. My husband is currently deployed to Kuwait and has been there for over 9 months and we are now on the home stretch and looking forward to re-deployment. We pretty much know where we are headed to next... Fort Sam Houston, TX!! I am so excited to go back to the States (we've been overseas for the last 5 years) and the bonus is that of going to my homestate of Texas. Can't wait for an actually HOUSE, finding a new home church (heard there are several), and finding a Co-op to learn and have fun with!

MY BOYS:

DS1 is 13 years old- he loves to draw (mostly dragons, action figures), love the medieval era, Science-guru (mainly geology), and wants to be a Zoologist or Forest Ranger.

DS2 is 9 years old - he loves to play sports; especially baseball. Love cuddles and nature walks. He's the all-American boy. Good heart, loving, easy-going.

DS3 is 5 years old - boy, if I ever had to butt-heads with a child, he is the one. He is a stubborn, independent boy I have ever seen. He loves hugging his momma though and likes to give her flowers (has been known to take from another person's garden though *sigh*). We had to have an immediate intervention on that event. He loves learning and I love being his Kindergarten teacher!! It's SUCH A BLAST!

DS4 is 2.5 years old - He's my cutie pie--- He loves to eat! LOL!! He's as big as his 5 year old brother (as in height/weight) but portioned right and healthy--just tall for his age. So people think I have twins. Ugh. Somedays I feel like I do. He loves his momma and his momma's hair as his blankie!! **IF ANYONE has a remedy for how to have my son stop pulling my hair out before I go bald (the hubby won't like that too much) --please comment below. Thank you in advance. What can I say--he's my baby boy.

We follow the Charlotte Mason method for homeschooling and this is pretty much our first full year trying to use all of her teachings...So it should be a fantastic year! We have already started homeschooling for this year (we had our official day on Monday) Well it's going a bit slow, but it's an adjustment period for them and for myself to get back into our homeschool schedule.

I would like the boys to start on their reading lists --mostly the list is from Beautiful Feet Books for Early American History (Intermediate for DS2 and Jr. High/High School for DS1). *Can you tell what there favorite subject is?? Can't wait to use timelines and notebooking for the 50 states.

Advice for raising boys?? Wow, believe me I am still learning...but I would have to say one or a few things:

1. Read, 'Raising Real Men' by Hal and Melaine Young -- I love this book.

2. Embrace Nature! LOL! I wasn't a bug person before my boys, but with the CM education, Nature Study is an everyday thing...boys live in Nature and so they should despite my rants about dirty clothes.

3. Love them and do show kindness, forgiveness, and show of respect. I constantly FAIL in this department, but I pray everyday to be better. Besides, I have once read - We are raising them to be a Godly person and for a wife and family. How do you want him to view God and how'll he be to his own family?? --Those are some pretty serious questions.

What does Nature Study do for us?

1. Gets us Outside

2. We love critters, so trying to name them is fun (Wow, Adam had a cool job naming all the animals.)

3. Honestly, I am a girl who didn't like bugs, so in a household FULL of boys--Nature Study helped me to overcome that phobia. (well it wasn't that horrible, but I didn't like to mess with bugs, at all.)

4. My husband told me a story about when he took the boys to see(I stayed at home) the movie Rio. At the beginning of the movie there was a scene of this beautiful tropical area and my Lucas was facinated with this picture. Well my lovely 4 year old said out loud for EVERYONE to hear in that movie theater that day. He stood up on his movie theater chair and said out loud, "God made that!" And my husband said, "Yes, you're right." And he smiled at knowing our sons know the truth about creation. --Not really sure what everyone else in the movie theater thought about that (hey, it's a military base), but they got a quick sermon from a little 4 year old. ;)

5. It's great for our Science classes and good for our Souls --that's enough for me. Spending time outside to enjoy our environment as a family is making wonderful memories.

6. Help with our Art too...we use a good supply of notebooks, crayons, map colors, watercolors and just go with the flow.

Daily Bible Reading - Professor G. Horner's Bible Reading System

The Joyful Keeper asked about how you (me) study your Bible. I find it interesting to see how many different ways one can study the Bible. To me, even though God's word DOES NOT change, it's like a fingerprint to our souls and minds.

Meaning, a verse or chapter can have a great affect in our hearts & minds more than the next person beside us. We each are at different levels in our Christian walk with Jesus Christ as well.

I do not know nearly enough of the Bible, but the key is that I do have the DESIRE to and want this for my children as well.

With our upcoming year in our homeschool, we will go through Allen B. Wolfe's - Balancing the Sword, Vol. I & II (if we get to Vol. II). The study approach section states this:

These questions are only an aid. Please do not look to these questions as a substitute for the reading (of God's Word). The Bible is essential to the Christian faith; Balancing the Sword is not.

He recommends that you read the chapter first and then test your comprehension by answering as many of the questions without assistance.

So, I am excited about this 'curriculum' we have chosen for our Biblical studies...as well as studying Paul's missionary journeys (A Beka 8th grade).

As far as personal devotion/reading I like to use....Professor Grant Horners Bible Reading System. Yeah, it's a mouth full, but I really have enjoyed this route for my Bible Reading time.

I have found his system to be wonderful. He says that we should just read our Bible. No cross-referencing, no taking the time to get into it too deeply. This is what I needed because I also found myself trying to cross-reference or trying to dig deeper in...but as you read and read through the Bible with this system --I feel the Bible comes MORE ALIVE for me and keeps my interest by having a system that doesn't go straight through,but throughout the Bible. Keeps my interest for sure.

With 10 Chapters a day you can easily read through your Bible (couple of times) if not several in a year. This is a major goal for me this year to actually have read through the entire Bible.

*I have modified it for me though, instead of using his bookmarks I use note cards with the books/chapters printed on them. So when I read a chapter, I can just mark it off and helps me keep tabs of my reading.

My husband also uses this system and he made a wonderful xl sheet to help him track his progress.

As you look on the church landscape, youth are leaving the faith in droves. The modern church, overall, is struggling to reach the next generation with the gospel. What has happened? Whether for good or bad, men, for many years, have been inventing solutions or brainstorming ideas without fully relying upon the foundation of God’s Word.

God, however, is greater than man, and as the heavens are above the earth, so are His ways higher than ours and His thoughts than our thoughts (Is. 55:8-9). We have substituted the greater for the lesser – God’s wisdom for man’s ideas. Jesus said that he who hears His Word and does it, is like a man that built his house upon a rock, and when the storm came, it stood firm. On the other hand, he who rejects His Word, is like a man who built on the sand and when the storm came, the house fell (Matt. 7:24-25).

Shouldn’t the church, as a whole, abandon the sandy ideas of man and shamelessly return to the firm rock of the Word of God? God’s Word sufficiently identifies how youth are to be reached. Homeschool Mother's Journal: 15 July 2011 (Last Summer Edition)

In my life this week…

Since we are on summer vacation the last two weeks with R&R and extended family (MIL & Friend) coming in from the States--we have had a super busy!

Since they have never been to Germany (extended family) we took a trip to Edelweiss (in Garmisch, Germany). It was so beautiful and I never get tired of visiting that area.

In our homeschool this week…

Haven't done anything with our homeschool room or schedule this last two weeks, but this coming week I will have time to at least plan out 4 weeks, if not the whole first term. We will start back up again on the 25th of July.

I believe we have everything we need to start this next school year...

Just won a book recently and I can't WAIT to review it!! I made a post the other day about Living Math and this book is JUST the book I need. ;) But the key to this math book is that it has a biblical perspective focus...which I know I will love.

Mountains (God's Beauty)

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Well, for the last two weeks, we've been in the lower area of Bavaria, Germany. Mostly in Garmisch. Photos to come! ;)

We want to go see Car 2, but not sure if I want to face the crowds (it's free and only one showing (military theater). So, I think we might just wait for it on Blu-ray.

Our oldest we be going to his first Youth Conference and we are both excited for him to go and see what God has in store for him and his life. I pray he has a great experience, both spiritually and mentally.

Having my husband home to spend our 14th anniversary together. ;)

What’s working/not working for us…

-Hubby finishing out the deployment.
-Homeschool plans coming together.
-Soccer/Flag football coming up.
-Pick up where we left off on our Ladies Bible Study.
-Car is A-OKAY now, four new tires.
-But, window on passenger side of our truck--slow to rise/gets stuck. UGH.

L is for Lapbooks!

A lapbook is basically an educational learning tool made from a folder.

Materials needed (but unlimited to):

-Color printer ; )
-Colored file folders
-Crayons, color pencils, markers
-Old Magazines/Photos/ Copy Materials/Lapbook sets
-'Pocket' envelopes to slide mini-books into
-Adhesives: 2-sided tape, packing tape, glue stick
-Index cards
-stickers
-staple
-templates-sm. ziplock bags
-laminator

Lapbooks are fantastic. I believe that any homeschool philosophy or whichever the way a child learns, lapbooks can be fit into the curriculum as a fun project or even the main technique for learning for any subject. For example, I have an older child who dislikes doing book reports, so he does his book report via lapbooking, it's his book report in detail! ;) There are plenty for free templates by searching and/or you can buy elaborate ones from most homeschool friendly outlets.

I first time I looked at lapbooks was through a homeschool conference. I have also reviewed several lapbooks from A Journey Through Learning lapbooks and Hands of a Child (both which are excellent by the way), but if you live on a shoe-string homeschool (who isn't these days?) there are plenty of free ones available...and/or you can definitely make one from scratch!

Right now I only do lapbooks with my pre-kinder/kindergarten boys. They love to color, practice with their cut/paste skills. We are going through the alphabet in our lapbooking. Each folder we make, it dedicate it to one letter at a time, so eventually we'll have 26 different lapbooks (A-Z). We use a biblical theme for our letters (e.g. A is for Angel, B is for Bible, etc. etc.) and I put in different photos of things that pertain to that letter and a short bible verse they can learn.

The great thing is that we can go back and review them...and they are fun to create!

M is for Math, Living Math that is...

Living Math -you ask? Yeah, living math. Living math is math concept that CM (Charlotte Mason) mentions in her philosophy. Living math is basically hands on, real-life experience in every day living. It is not math on paper (worksheets) but solving problems (life). How do we double this recipe to make enough cookies, if we have to buy four new tires for the car @ $100.00 each, plus X amount of labor service—how much to we have to pay the mechanic?

Living math is using math in the home, at the grocery store, the bank, anywhere really. If we really look, we use math everyday--why not make it fun?

What is Kumon Workbooks? Kumon Workbooks use the Kumon method to help children remain motivated as they learn. Each workbook focuses on teaching one specific skill from start to finish.

Basically the founder of this method, Mr. Toru Kumon, was a parent/teacher who wanted more for his own child. He started out with making assignments for extra help (at home) and by making the lessons a little more challenging from the previous lesson, he son was able to do calculus by the time he was in sixth grade.

HA HA HA!! Now do I need my kindergartener learn calculus by the sixth grade??? Not hardly, but I love these workbooks. I have been collecting them little by little for my kinder for this fall to use.

I think they are great, but following a Charlotte Mason type philosophy, she probably wouldn't agree on workbooks!! ;) But I think they are fun in moderation.

Right now I am collecting the Basic Skills Workbooks and then probably go to Verbal Skill Workbooks and then Math Skills --And they are not too pricey, especially when I get them on-post at the Bookmark.

I really like them...they are colorful and bold and FUN!! :)

This Homeschool Mother's Summer Journal: 24 June 2011

In my life this week…

Well, this last week and this week have been stressful. I am getting ready for the hubby to come home for 2 weeks after many, many months of this deployment. It's all the excitement and stress of getting everything done before he arrives.

Planning out literally every minute of the days (well at least every day) because of our limited time. Mind you, it's not set in stone, but it's for us to have a good idea of what we want to do during this precious time together.

Literally have one week with him and then family arrives for the second week...but it's all good and the boys are excited for them to come on over the deep blue sea.

In our homeschool this week…

We have been done with school (this year) since end of May, but I have them at least reading one book for now. I need to start reorganizing our "Learning Room" before the Hubby gets here too, because after he leaves, we will start the new school year.

Mainly because when he gets back from deployment, we'll be able to take time off and a possible PCS (permanent change of station) mid-year.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I finally received my homeschool planner and binder. I love it!! I just need to start filling in the blanks!! ;)

I would definitely say...plan as much as you can on break, because it gets hectic once you get into full swing of homeschooling. I know some don't like to plan ahead, but I do. It makes it easier for me.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

My older two boys are going to Europa-Park this week and me and the rug rats are going to a place called, Marchenwald Sambachshof for some much needed fun. Can't wait!! Photos later on, for sure.

My favorite thing this week was…

Seeing our former pastor come for a visit on Wednesday night. I attend a missionary church here in Germany and there's currently a Missionary Conference going on and so he was able to stop by our church. It was great to see him. His wife couldn't attend because she is still in the States waiting on a visitors 'visa' for Italy.

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork....and kind of understand via being a military spouse!!

Strawberry Picking Goodness

Friend of mine, Rhonda, ask me one morning to go to the local strawberry field in our German town and I accepted the invitation and boy was it a treat.

Normally I am not the type to go out a venture for my 'food' --and if you called that an adventure...lol you'd know I am not much of a farmer... ha ha ha

Anyhow, the boys and I really enjoyed going out to visit this small, but lovely patch of strawberries conveniently located in the city...

We were scheduled to go the next day with a group of ladies from post, but Rhonda had mentioned that rain was on the forecast for that day and I really didn't want to take four boys to a muddy field and expect them to behave. ;) (as it turned out the weather was too bad, but still)

As we were bending down to view the strawberry plants I was reminded of my (grand)mother in her field-working days. My grandmother adopted me in my early years and I remember her working in the fields in the hot weather in Smallville, Texas. (not really the name but the state is right)... I remember getting up while it was still dark outside, she made several bean tacos for us all to eat for lunch, wrapped them in foil individually and packed them up to go. I really can't remember who all went, but I know a couple of my cousins tagged along too.

I can remember one day trying to pick up the hoe and try to imitate what they were doing...everyone got a kick out it..."The kid thinks working in the field is FUN!!" It's definitely HARD WORK!! I thought it was fun, because I was with my mom. Though life had its ups and downs living with grandparents, I still can remember days were it was memorable...

Back to strawberry picking...I told my boys about those times with my grandmother in the fields...hot day like this one...can you imagine it boys?? I suppose at some point we all go through the stage of telling about grandparents to our children, especially if that's all you have (the memories).

The boys really took to picking the strawberries. We first looked and observed the plants, looked at what I wanted them to pick and then look at berries we DIDN'T want to pick. Even my two year old got it right!! We ended up with a basket full of strawberries!! Cost me 15 Euros (about 20 USD)!!

I loved it when my oldest said, "This is addicting" and went further down to pick even more strawberries...

It was a great outing to go to with my boys and reminiscing about my mother who has been passed away 1 year now. That's the greatness of having children...to understand what our parents went through in order to raise us and learn from them; their successes and failures.

At least I know my boys are not allergic to working. ;) ~Must be doing something right.

ABC's of Homeschooling: Internet & Jesus

I is for Internet

I cannot say enough about homeschooling and the tool called the Internet. Being overseas and homeschooling for the first time...the best thing that helped me through the process was having Internet. I could research curriculum, chat with other veteran homeschool parents, and even 'attend' homeschool conferences!!

It has been a great tool in our homeschool!! I am grateful for being able to use. I love that I can research anything, print out an activity, let the boys play an educational math game, and learn a new language with helpful videos...

Free information galore!!! I love it! Of course, as a Christian, we have to discern and weed out bad materials, and/or help our children with netiquette for them and ourselves.

There's just vast amounts of information that I can't even begin to explain...and if you are anywhere near a computer with Internet connection...you know what I am talking about! ;) Rather than repeating my favorites (because I have alot of them) -please look to the right-hand sidebar for my favorite links and icons to all my lovely goodies that I love to visit and re-visit again and again. ;)

I love lapbooks, notebooks, freebies, lesson plans, planners, curriculum guides/reviews, and Simply Charlotte Mason. ;)

*Please forgive me about having three posts in one...These last several weeks have been excruciatingly busy for us.

F is for Field Trips

Wow, what can I say...one of the benefits of living overseas is the field trips. With being in Europe, in particular Germany, we have seen Lugwig's castles, museums, concentration camps, Martin Luther's location for translating the Bible in Coburg, Hitler's Eagle Nest, Salt Mines, Zugspitze, the vast amount of History in one location is exciting to me.

We only have months left here and this will probably be our last tour overseas before my husband retires from the Army. I have a few places I would like to still see, but these field trips -I hope- reminds our children of our travels while being in the military as a positive experience. To understand that we are from the world, but not of this world. To be well-rounded and knowledgeable about different cultures, but overall stand strong in our strength and faith for Christ.

G is for Goal

I found "Goal" in the 1828 Webster's Dictionary, but I also found Purpose to be the definition closely related to Goals.

Goal: 3. The end or final purpose; the end to which a design tends, or which a person aims to reach or accomplish. Each individual seeks a several goal.

It's funny that we always (or at least I do) have a goals-orientated sheet; long-term and short-term, but in reality...sometimes we never do meet some of these goals (for whatever reason).

But if we have a purpose:

1. That which a person sets before himself as an object to be reached or accomplished; the end or aim to which the view is directed in any plan, measure or exertion. We believe the Supreme Being created intelligent beings for some benevolent and glorious purpose, and if so, how glorious and benevolent must be his purpose in the plan of redemption! The ambition of men is generally directed to one of two purposes, or to both; the acquisition of wealth or of power. We build houses for the purpose of shelter; we labor for the purpose of subsistence.

I find it extremely sad that most people do not know their purpose in life. So, by homeschooling, we are teaching them which GOALS and priorities are necessary to have a PURPOSE in their lives.

To bring honor and glory to God. Enough said. ;)

H is for Habits

Charlotte Mason was adamant on Habits; for it is one of the key ingredients of education.

Definition Webster Dictionary:

Habit: 4. A disposition or condition of the mind or body acquired by custom or a frequent repetition of the same act. Habit is that which is held or retained, the effect of custom or frequent repetition. Hence we speak of good habits and bad habits.

Quotes from A Charlotte Mason Education webpage:

The good habit of paying attention can be established by using short lessons. Short lessons consist of 15 to 20 minutes in length during elementary school. They increase to 30 minutes per subject in junior high and to 45 minutes in high school. Remember, the Charlotte Mason students were in school six days a week--you, as a home schooler, probably are not. You can and should adjust the daily minutes to suit yourself and your family. By the way, the idea of short lessons is often approached with skepticism. My quesiton to you is, do you have anything to lose by trying it? I cannot even count the parents who tried this and now swear by it.

Eventually your child will mature and as he does he has to make himself pay attention. Mason said, "He should be taught to feel a certain triumph in compelling himself to fix his thought." Your job, in the interim, is to make sure that your child never does a leeson into which he does not put his heart. This will build the habit of finishing, which brings me to my all-time favorite teaching of Charlotte Mason which is, "What is worth beginning is worth finishing, and what is worth doing is worth doing well."

In my life this week...

I don't know...this week was kinda weird. It seems like I am living in the Groundhog Day movie....every day seems the same day in and day out. I wasn't able to talk to my husband at all this week until today!! It was a happy moment. I found out he is sending me my belated Mother's Day gift!! Yippee!! I suppose weeks like this, we just pray and thank the Lord that we are alive and that we are able to do what we do daily. I am thankful to the Lord for our health, for our joy, and for His loving hands watching over us in a time of need. God is Good. ;)

In our homeschool this week...

Since I am in a re-arranging mode, much of our homeschooling has been bare minimum. I am upset that we haven't done more this week, but the boys are doing okay. My oldest (7th grader) just received his scores from taking the Terra Nova. I am very pleased with his scores...otherwise I still think he needs MORE math exercises... and as long as I can get my 4th grader to read at least 3 chapters in his book, we are doing well. LOL!!

My favorite thing this week was...

Well, on Wednesday afternoon -after the boys had their Guitar practices, we stay out and had a very nice picnic at the local park. Even though this week was a little rough...I saw at that moment what a very blessed life we have...my boys (despite the fact that they are without their father) are very happy and it shows. I wouldn't want it any other way... (well, aside from wanting the hubby here) ;)

What's working/not working for us...

Well, the one thing I am sad about is this...I bought and signed up to be apart of the 31 days to Clean, but I have come to realize...BEFORE I do anything else...I have to DE-CLUTTER my home. That's my MAIN ISSUE!! I keep cleaning...only to have to more extra work because we don't simplify our/my home. I have been reading for each day the devotionals so far, they are fantastic, but the schedule is JUST not working for me personally.

That is what I've been doing this whole week...bought a new bed for one of the boys, going through all of our clothing (TONS OF CLOTHES) --this is why laundry is NEVER done....too many clothes!! So, by tomorrow we should be caught up and ready to go on with the 31-days to Clean.

Also, I will have to tweak the schedule because I don't have my own carpet cleaner...so I will have to go throughout the house, de-clutter, clean, and then clean the floors (carpet) because I'll have to rent one. Yeah, I don't feel like renting it each other week. LOL! Overall though, I love the devotions...they are good and thought provoking!

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Well, it's not a question but more of a plan...as we near our homeschool year, I have been heavily thinking about changing to year-round homeschooling. Why?

1. We still need to catch up one or two weeks to add
2. With the deployment...school is keeping us all SANE
3. I will want to take the block leave off (when the husband re-deploys back home)
4. We will be PCSing during our next 'school year'

And with following the Charlotte Mason philosophy..it will not be hard to do. I will start them earlier on their reading list for next year and definitely keep up with their math. For my oldest --right now he is finishing up Life of Fred, pre-algebra with biology. This school year LoF author came out with a new book, pre-algebra 2 with Economics. So, I will order this book very soon, and he'll just go right into that and hopefully by Aug/Sept. he'll go right into Algebra 1 (Life of Fred). With my 4th grader...he is using Math-U-See...he'll finish Delta and then go with Life of Fred Fractions and so forth...or we might have to stick with Math-U-See for another year.

We are happy to announce that our oldest boy tried out for a local German soccer (football) team, and he made the cut!! He knows the coach from baseball... He has his work cut out for him though...he's one of the youngest on the team and he's used to playing American soccer, but the good news is...he has until the fall to get into shape, passing drills, and learn how to kick from the inside and not the toes!! :)

Last Co-Op for the Year 2010-2011

Well, as far as putting together a small homeschool co-op--I am glad that we were able to finish out the year nicely. It started out with a fairly great amount of homeschoolers, but as with the military life goes; some families had PCS (leave to go to their next duty station), or chose to live near family back in the states (during a deployment), and/or some stopped attending altogether (for whatever reason). We dwindled down to four families --which is totally fine.

My boys enjoy the mornings and looked forward to them so that they could interact with other homeschoolers in our small overseas community. We planned and stayed with only once per month for the Co-Op; seemed doable and it was...for such a small group. At first we planned out group field trips, but with a small group and as it downsized --we went alone as a family for field trips in the end.

Anyway, for our homeschool co-op we only had art and gym. I did the gym class and my boys said they had fun. We were able to use a facility on-post (school-age center) --which was very nice and convenient. They let us utilize their art room/gym & gym equipment.

Remind me, I have to do something nice for the director or someone at the facility...

So overall, I'd say it was definitely a FIRST YEAR OF HOMESCHOOL CO-OP SUCCESS!

Next year, we plan to add History course to our Co-Op. I do pray everything gets worked out for next year. I'll have to plan (get with the SAC again) for next year's schedule...fun never ends! ;)

E is for Eternal

Now, one of the many reasons we went from government school to homeschooling was our own desire to please God and from the scripture we read through...

Some can argue such things, but I do believe this is what God has us to do at this moment and we've had total peace about it also.

Aside from this, after several on-line homeschool conference I attended at the beginning of our homeschool journey and participating in a military marriage retreat-- we came up with a family motto and mission statement.

Here is our family mission statement:

The mission of our family is to create a nurturing place of faith, love, truth, happiness, and to provide opportunity for each individual to become responsibly independent, and effectively interdependent, in order to serve as effective members within our family and community.

Our Family mission is to:

1. Love each other

2. To worship the Lord together

3. To wisely use our time, resources, talents to bless others

4. To promote a loving, kind, and happy family atmosphere

5. To maintain patience through understanding

6. Resolve conflicts with each other rather than harboring anger

7. To pray together

8. To value honesty and integrity

9. To help each other, motivate each other

10. To bring glory to God.

In my life this week...

Nothing to exciting this week, same as ever...though we did find out Ethan made the cut for the German soccer team!! Soccer is my oldest favorite sport and although he is probably the youngest on the team...and with a little more practice playing German soccer, he'll be great at it! Official games will not start until fall, so that should give him time to get really in shape to play come fall season. In Germany, to play on a team you basically apply for a 'passport' with the soccer club. Each town usually have their own clubs for each age group youth to adult. So tomorrow we'll give the coach the passport picture for his soccer 'passport' and fees for uniform/team.

In our homeschool this week...

We are doing alot of reading. My oldest is reading 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and my 9 y/o is readying Black Beauty. I am amazed how my pre-K is learning so much. It's like a light switch. Some days....you learn and read over material and then in one moment...you see that he can recognize a letter or count to a X number among other things!! See this is way homeschooling is so great! Those first moments and knowing you have a detailed part of that learning...

Reading:

English: lots of copying from Bible and writing in their Journibles (Book of Proverbs)
History: Listening to CDs by Diana Waring (Ancient Civilizations & the Bible)

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

Umm..no planned field trips for now...other than the local park. Friday-I had a luncheon with my husband Bn. --It's Military Spouse Appreciation Day/Volunteer Appreciation Month, and May is the month to celebrate Military Appreciation Month---so all rolled into one and have a lovely lunch at one of my favorite restaurants.

Mother's Day we went well with my friend & her kids and we (hubby's are both deployed) all ate out at a local Italian restaurant. YUMMY!! Hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day!

My favorite thing this week was...

Probably my weekly Bible Study. We are studying "Hope for the Home Front: Winning the Emotional and Spiritual Battles of a Military Wife" ---Aah! It's SUCH a Blessing to be doing this study during a deployment. It's great and I recommend it! I think everyone recommends it...its been on back order for awhile, glad I ordered it when I could! ;)

What's working/not working for us...

The heat. In Germany there is NO AIR CONDITIONING! :( we have a small unit we bought last year and I bought another one used, but I haven't been able to install them for this year. I need to because yesterday was the start of some serious heat (for Germany anyway)... What bugs me is the windows here...if you can remember my last post... you'd see what I mean. LOL!! Okay...I will quit complaining...the Lord doesn't like that too much. :)

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Living overseas...is an experience that I will never forget. Again, it's one of the 'perks' about being a military spouse...the hubby's position takes us overseas--sometimes it's wanted and sometimes it can be terrifying (if it's your first time).

This is our second overseas tour. In 2000-2003, we spent our first tour in Wuerzburg, Germany. We live on-post and we had a fairly great tour. With only one child and added another one by end of tour--we were pretty flexible in our travels;

11. Würzburg Residenz: The Residenz is a beautiful place to visit. I enjoyed this city.

10. Of course being in Germany you have to see the Schloss Neuschwanstein --what a beautiful area.

9. If you ever come to Germany, there is a thing (road) called the "Romantic Road" --One four-day weekend ~we set sail and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. (YEAH FOR FOUR DAY WEEKENDS!)

8. King Ludwig II of Bavaria had many castles built for him in relatively in the same area and we visited the three main ones.

7. Trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to visit Edelweiss Lodge & Resort. It's simply amazing to go there...

6. Easily from Garmisch you can visit and we have visited:

a. Neuschwanstein Castle
b. Linderhof Palace
c. Herrenchiemsee
d. Munich
e. Dachau WWII Concentration Camp (I went by myself on a MWR tour)
f. Berchtesgaden and The Eagle's Nest
g. Nuremberg Zoo
h. Of course you can't forget: Zugspitze

5. Before we ended by in Germany for a second tour; we were stationed in Belgium for a year (Army transition will do that to you) So, we have visited (while in Belgium) Brussels

4. What a LOVELY place; Brugge (went on a ladies trip with our church family)

3. Which brings me back to Germany (and a like resemblance to Brugge) - Rothenburg ob der Tauber

2. Our first tour here, we had friends who lived in Vicenza --so of course we had to go visit them in Italy! ;) Italy is MY FAVORITE! While there we went to Citta di Venezia (Venice) for our anniversary. ;) Overrated, but it was nice...he he he

1. My number one place of all time is Rome, Italy. --We stayed a week there touring the area and I must say...I would live there if I could!! (oh, our baby boy his name is Roman: FYI!) Roman Paul to be exact. ;)

Oh, there are PLENTY OF PLACES we have visited (not mentioned above) and places we have NOT visited...but bottom line is--if you come overseas or where ever you live, YOU MUST TRAVEL!!! We've only been in Europe and the States...but again people get stationed around the world! How exciting!

I do love to travel...even with all our boys we manage to have a great time. ;) Though now---more of our trips are geared for the boys. *SIGH* It's okay though...it's only for a season.

I have fun no matter where we go as long as we go as a family...

Oh..deployment hasn't stop me and the boys from traveling (close by) either! :) Our last field trip was to the Sinsheim Museum and it was excellent! Planning to go to the Technik MUSEUM SPEYER

Yes, I am dreaming, but I would still like to travel to Spain, Ireland, Greece, Egypt, and many other places...but right now, at this moment, taking care of my boys takes top priority... Maybe when the DH comes home from deployment...we will get to visit Spain. That's where I definitely want to visit before we head back home to the states.

I'll let you in on a little secret of ours...when we were newly married at lived at Ft. Polk, LA -we went to a local garden (very beautiful in fact), but the unique thing about it was this;

There was a older couple (age in their late 70s or 80s), was visiting the area too. He was a military man too, retired and enjoying life traveling with his wife. They were such a sweet couple and we briefly met with them and chatted with them...but they made an impact on our lives (my husband and I).

They had a pet names, he called her, "Momma" and she, "Daddy" --Nothing immature or sick about it. Just an endearment to each other...

They were traveling by RV and were touring the States.

I want to be like that couple. Loving life, loving the mate God had given them, and touring in an RV till kingdom come or the latter-end of life.

Sometimes we do call each other by [their] pet names...but alas, were still a little 'young' for that... HA HA HA

Anyway, here's to traveling and to say that it's a privilege to be a military spouse, is sometimes an understatement.

11 things I love about being the Wife of a Soldier

1. I love a man in uniform (of course)

2. Knowing that he is apart of 1% of the USA population that serves his country. (small group of special people)

3. Traveling to places I probably would have never (in my lifetime) visited otherwise.

4. The benefits!! (Love/Hate relationship) LOL!

5. "Birds of a feather flock together" ~ Military Wives Rock! ~We love and support our husbands 100%

6. Military Balls - enough said.

7. Sense of pride and patriotism for my Soldier and Country

8. Marriage Retreats & Education Benefits

9. Military Children - Proud to be a military mom to military children --It's NOT easy.

10. Missionary Churches Overseas - I love my church that we have available that serve our military families!!

11. Retirement!! YAHOO!! Closer to retirement and though it's been a journey, we are on the down slope and we will always have our memories

Most are about what I can get, which can seems a little bit selfish, but I feel that military men & woman (plus their families) sacrifice alot to serving their country. It's also (FOR ME) a privilege to be a military spouse. My husband is my one true friend. Going through a deployment right now, makes me appreciate him all the more.

I love and miss you Honey!! See you when you get back. ;)

The Homeschool Post: My Swap Sister Exchange

What is the Swap Sister Exchange?

Here are the basic rules for every swap:

1. Don’t offer to participate and sign up if you can’t get the gift in the mail on time (you have 2 months).
2. Don’t spend more than 15$ on your swap gift (not including postage). You will end up making your buddy feel like they didn’t give enough to you.
3. Get to know your swap buddy. Pray for them! Send them a Bible verse! Email them! Etc.!
4. Do NOT share your swap buddies’ personal information (last names or addresses) with anyone else.
5. Make sure you post a photo and ‘Thank You’ for your swap sister – thanking her and linking to her blog.
6. Email me a copy of your swap post link so I can showcase it for the following month!

D is for Dedication

DEDICATION, n.

1. The act of consecrating to a divine Being, or to a sacred use, often with religious solemnities; solemn appropriation; as the dedication of Solomons temple.

2. The act of devoting or giving to.

3. An address to a patron, prefixed to a book, testifying respect and recommending the work to his protection and favor.

In the public school setting we have all remembered or even participated in the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) as a volunteer. When we first started homeschooling, yes, there was a moment of feeling out of the loop so to speak (public school), but now I realize that I am the ultimate PTA member. LOL!! I read this on another homeschool mom's blog. I just had to laugh!!

We volunteer our entire time to our children's education. No PTA member here. Look, I am not trying to start a debate, because homeschooling is not for everyone--I know. But I wanted to highlight that there is a difference.

It takes DEDICATION to do this (homeschooling). I found out quickly and I have seen both sides of the education spectrum. Now that we do homeschool, I see the differences in our lives and in their education as a whole and I know my husband and I made the right decision for our children.

Dedication. I like the 2nd definition above: The act of devoting or giving to. --It completely sums up a homeschool family. We devote our time, energy, loyalty to the family and ultimately to God. We give to our children because that's what the Bible says a family should look like. We give that obedience to God and not looking at the present day, but the future of our children's body, mind, and souls.

It takes dedication everyday to have a successful homeschool. I believe that with all my heart. Yes, somedays are really bad, but most are extremely successful. We completely enjoy it. It's not easy-pesy, but life in general isn't either, right?

Why I Want a Clean Home...

I am participating in the 31 Days to Clean Challenge hosted by Joyful Mothering.

Day 1 the discussion is "Why exactly do you want a clean home?"

What all this boils down to---is this:

My home is my mission field. Over these months of homeschooling my 4 sons and while the husband is deployed...I have fallen-off the wagon. Now, I need to jump back on the band wagon of having a Christ-honoring home. Mind you, my house will NEVER EVER be 100% clean ---I understand that, but I need to be mission-minded about my home in general. This home is supposed to be our haven, our worship center as a family.

This verse is given in the e-book, "Proverbs 31:27 ~ She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness."

That Proverbs 31 woman will be the death of me (trying to achieve to her status) --but through God's grace I do believe she is achievable in heart.

I will have to do this first:

1. Establish priorities
2. Set time limits
3. Delegate (this is HUGE for me to do)
4. Plan for rewards for the whole family

I have great lists for:

1. Bible Reading (Template to help record your readings)

3. "Total Mess to Total Rest" Chart

4. Family Activity Calendar(free basic calendar)

Well it is said that in forming a habit it has to take 27 days or more...so, by the end of May, 2011, I pray that my outlook on my household is God-focused, Christ-honoring, and full of CONTENTMENT in our daily lives.

Some of the perks (if I am allowed to say that) when the hubby is deployed is that some services that are free to our military children. We are allotted a few hours per month of respite care, boys can enter two sports seasons for free, and X amount of money towards extra curricular activities such as private guitar lessons they recently took up...

Our boys have been going to their practice for several months now and they both seems to enjoy it. :) Which is fantastic. It's available and they learn to play an instrument, it's definitely apart of their curriculum...

Well, today is the last day of April. April is the month of the Military Child. So, every year during this month, Army-wide Military Children are celebrated!! Either it's something like the Kinderfest or free bowling or what-have you. This is our second one here in Germany...So, anyway, Ethan was selected (asked) if he could be willing to show his 'skills' during the Kinderfest. "Sure." he said.

It conflicted with his baseball schedule, but since he made this commitment first to his guitar instructor...he had to skip out on baseball this weekend...he was kinda of bummed out...but hey---we all can't be at the same time in two different places. Just doesn't happen and we have to instill that "my word still counts."

Meanwhile, another homeschool friend, Jennifer and I set up a homeschool table during the Kinderfest--like we did last year--not too many showed interest in homeschooling right now, but hey--this is a very small military community and not to mention also that we are an overseas community. Information about homeschooling is NOT lacking in this community though...so that is satisfactory. Would also like to thank my other lovely homeschool friend, Heather, for helping out with materials for our table!!

Overall, this past week was fun, exciting, and exhausting!! Glad my Ben was able to go to his baseball game and that Ethan was able to be a presenter at this year's Kinderfest...my other two had a blast riding ponies, and eating LOTS of candy! *Sigh*

This Homeschool Mother's Journal: 30 April 2011

In my life this week...

Last Sunday was Easter and we had a lovely time at church and spent most of the day there...even though my husband wasn't there to celebrate with us (due to deployment), we were able to chat in the evening that night. Always makes me feel better to see his face and hear his voice.

Well, this week was pretty busy! ;) Ethan had his first soccer try-out this week, and hopefully he will make the team (German soccer team). I am glad he has the opportunity to play a different style of soccer. The experience will help his 'game' when we get back to the States. It's his favorite sport also...so soccer PLUS baseball season is in full swing. Benny is playing baseball--but he loves this sport too. He asked me today if he could play tennis...sadly this post doesn't have it, but I told him that by this time next year---we'll be in the States, and I am sure we can get him tennis lessons...

Started up a new bible study with my fellow sweet military spouses & friends. This time around we are going through Hope for the Home Front. We did Week 1... and it was mainly about our attitudes of life in general. Like with the 12 tribes were to go out and bring back a report of the land. 10 men came back with negative reports, where as two came back with GOOD reports and confidence in the almighty God.

The half-full/half-empty philosophy. Which tribe would you be apart of?

In our homeschool this week...

This week in our homeschool we did bare minimum, but that's okay. Bible, Math, Reading, English. Almost done for the YEAR!!! AWESOME! :)

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

1. Went to a bowling alley for a game with the ladies(& a guy) within the BN and had some lunch.
2. Our Bible Study with the Ladies
3. Bamberg for ortho. appt. and a Teen Career Fair
4. Dinner at a friend's home. YUMMY! ;)

My favorite thing this week was...

Friday: Caught up with a fellow homeschool friend and she had us over for there wonderful Friday HOMEMADE- all the goodies pizza night. LOVED IT!! Her pizza was excellent! Thank you Heather! ;) The boys and I had a lovely time

What's working/not working for us...

Well, this is a two-sided predicament. What's working for us and NOT working for us...is this busy schedule we call life! LOL!! In one hand-being able to get out of the house has cured my insanity (from the deployment), but it also causes some stress. I can't say much because the boys are having fun and enjoying the activities...I just don't want to over extend us on anything. So far I DON'T feel overwhelmed by it---other than my evil laundry room. I am in the process to simplifying our house.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Well, since it's Month of the Military child...we will have a KINDERFEST on Saturday. It's basically an all day event for parents and children. All kinds of goodies and information centers to give great stuff. Last year, I did participate with my first homeschool information booth and this year more homeschool moms in our community will participate in 'manning' our table for interested homeschooling parents/children. So, I will post picture/information later on in the week... It should be a blast tomorrow! Also, my oldest is to perform a short performance with his guitar teacher...so excited!!

Today after his ortho. appt. we hopped on over to this event, Teen Career Fair, to see how it would go and just to get a feel of what one is like. It's was very small, but it's a small community overseas. Ethan got to see information about some colleges and their majors...

He picked out information on majors:

1. Veterinary Medicine --eight years of College?? YIKES!! I am thinking a major in Zoology is a better choice...but we'll see.
2. Natural Resources: Wildlife Science, Forestry, Geograpny

So, that may change come high school years...but it definitely helps me plan for his curriculum and gear it towards those types of professions/majors.

Wow...it's already that time of year again. Everyone is busy looking at catalogs, going to homeschool conferences, (or like me) shopping on-line for our curriculum. Well, I am glad to say that we have our curriculum ready for this school year! YAY!

I am always interested in what everyone else is using and their learning styles/methods...it helps me decide by reading their reviews (likes and dislikes)

As with the Charlotte Mason method, most of our curriculum carries over---hence, another reason why I love CM. It does really save on curriculum choices, time, and money!

ABC's of Homeschooling: C is for Charlotte Mason

C is for Charlotte Mason

Oh how I love Charlotte Mason. I am not sure at which point I came across her philosophy...but I think it was during a online homeschool conference a year or so back...no wait! It was before I was homeschooling and I was researching about it when a church friend suggestion Ambleside Online...but the whole concept of just reading (was foreign to me!) --and so I left it alone and now I love the site!! ;) Sometimes words of wisdom are given, sometimes we ignore and sometimes we just have to follow. lol.

The first year we homeschooled, it was a box curriculum and I am grateful for having it our first year because it made us realized what works and what doesn't work.

I read many a books about her philosophy and the one I really enjoy is: A Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola. I am really enjoying it right now...and plan to eventually get CM series too.

You can read her (Charlotte Mason's) series online at Ambleside Online. Ambleside is such a wonderful site for me to use. I base most of my curriculum off of the site, but I don't use it entirely.

What I love about Charlotte Mason:

No Homework
Free Afternoons for doing what they love..playing outside, practicing Guitar, Games
Living Books--love the reading list and there's no 'twaddle' here
Picture & Music Study (which makes me put it in the curriculum where at I normally would not)
Nature Study (this is a big one also--forces me outside the house! I love every minute of it)
Narration (this saves the amount of paperwork that we DON'T have to do) Grades are usually Pass or No Pass (besides Math)
Habit -CM says that everyone has habits; good and bad. But we must instill GOOD habits within our children (and ourselves) --good for routine
Many, many other advantages to this particular philosophy...

Homeschool Mother's Journal: 22 April 2011

In my life this week…

In our homeschool this week…

It was Spring Break for most of DoDDs students and German Students (school) and so we decided to take another week off. My boys spend several nights with their German friend. I just lounged around with my two young ones and rested. It was very nice, and the weather was great!! Sunny all week!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

I hosted a BBQ at my home for our BN Halfway Mark (more or less) ---that means we have SIX MORE MONTH to go before I get my DH back!! ;) Downhill from here and now...

My favorite thing this week was…

Since we didn't do much of school work, we did however get to the library...
Found to great books on Vincent Willem van Gogh. I do appreciate having a library, especially one overseas.

What’s working/not working for us…

What's NOT working for us...is the heat. German housing does not have ANY central air/heat inside them. You have to buy individual units, but it is SO frustrating because the windows are not like American spec windows. They don't open to slide up/down, but sideways. Here's a short video of what I am talking about.

I mean really---I will have to get heavy duty cardboard, duct tape, stand tall enough for the air conditioner unit--and make shift a CLOSED window.

--Just another thing military families DISLIKE about being here. (MIND YOU) ---there are plenty of things to LOVE, but this is just an inconvenience. That's all. An annual inconvenience. LOL!!

31 Days to Clean Challenge at Joyful Mothering

I will be participating in the challenge, 31 Days to Clean. With the release of Sarah Mae’s newest e-book, 31 Days to Clean, I have been preparing for the upcoming challenge taking place, beginning May 1st at Joyful Mothering.

Here’s how the challenge will work:
(From Joyful Mothering Blog Post)

1. Read the chapters each day that week. Highlight, take notes, do what you have to do to engage the material. Don’t just read it. Really allow it to change you. Journal, pray, look up scriptures.

2. Write a post (or more, if you like) sharing your most challenging chapter for that week and give us a personal glimpse as to why you struggle in this area. Don’t worry! We all have an area of struggle, so we will all be sharing! Share what you need that could help you in that area. I will be posting a struggle, but also some extra solutions to accompany what Sarah Mae has offered. If you feel compelled, why not also share something that comes easily for you? Perhaps you could offer tips to others who may be struggling?
